DSapseid Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Ive just bought myself some new components for a new machine have put it all together and its not working. Symptoms When the power button is pressed on the front of the case the psu fan, cpu fan and graphics card fan all come on at a reduced speed. I reset the cmos just as something to try and now it 'pulses' on and off. Things already done Reseated RAM, Proccessor, Graphics Card. unplugged all hdds and dvd drives tested psu with voltmeter and voltages are fine. Parts Gigabyte GA-P55a-UD3 LGA1156 motherboard Intel i7 760 socket LGA1156 CPU ATI Saphire Radeon HD5770 1gb PCIE Graphics Card 8gb DDR3 Kingston RAM 2 x Hitachi Deskstar 1tb SATA HDD Antec 300 Case Antec 650W PSU Sony DVD ROM LiteOn DVDRW Im thinking dead motherboard? What do you reckon?

No sleep and here at 6.30 this morning!! well normally when you put mobo to the case you have some little (sometimes brass) standoffs which you put in between the case and mobo

Im guessing you mean the power/reset buttons etc. Ive just pulled them all off except the power button and made sure the black was on the negative one. well normally when you put mobo to the case you have some little (sometimes brass) standoffs which you put in between the case and mobo Sorry yes i had them in. Still pulsing where the fans are on for about 7-8 seconds then off for 3 seconds.
DSapseid Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Ive just taken everything out and started again from scratch and found an onboard speaker in my box of stuff to try and diagnose further. When i press the on button now it is on for 3 seconds then off for 3 seconds then on for about 12 then repeats. When it is in the 12 second stage it beeps madly!! like as if a key on a keyboard was stuck in. There is no keyboard plugged in though. Only things attached, are CPU, RAM, 2 PSU cables, Power Button connector and speaker.
difinity Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 If the graphics card has been removed then it will give strange beeps. Does the graphics card require a power cable of some sorts ? maybe check the ram in another PC ? And to rule out a dodgy power switch remove it and short the 2 pins with a screwdriver.
DSapseid Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Well im thoroughly confused!! Its now working!! I just kept moving the ram sticks thorough different sockets and its now working!!!
Gurra Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Do you mean i5-760? If so, I would test a couple of different power supplies. Some supplies have a limitation on simultaneous +3.3V and +5V current, others need a minimum draw on all rails to work. Running the mobo outside of the box is also a good idea. Also go over any jumpers on the mobo in case some have fallen out. Try a different - lower power - graphics card. Try a different - older - CPU if possible - in case yours is defective or in case the BIOS version on the mobo isn't aware of the particular i5-760 version you have. The mobo could have been sitting on a shelf since it was released in the beginning of last year with a corresponding old BIOS version, while the CPU could be fresh from the factory.

ccp Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Glad to hear you got it working, I would check your RAM in another case if you can as you may have a faulty stick. Also check the RAM Rails to ensure none of the pins have come away from the rail itself. One other thing to check is to make sure everything that requires power - has power. Some mobos need seperate power which is generally supplied by the main ATX like connector.

I just kept moving the ram sticks thorough different sockets and its now working!!! i had this on a AM3 board a while ago, would boot and then stop or complain about fan headers, turned out it was an iffy mainboard. id run a memtest on it and do some stress testing as well.
PeteHopton Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Intel boards like RAM in certain configurations these days, think triple channel, a bit of RTFM and you can find out how it likes its RAM sticks.
