What would we do without these reports?

On radio 4 they were saying the report shows that children need to be put into groups / classes based on ability. Maybe they should have left the office and gone to a school.

I think you are missing the point a bit. All primary schools actually put children in SETS which means that different ability groups are in the same room but possibly doing slightly different things. Streaming is when the whole class is selected on ability, so there would be several classes for each subject, and the range of ability in each class would be small.

This is not normally done anymore. I have worked in Primary schools for 11 years and none have ever 'streamed', but all 'set'.

There appears to be confusion in the media too, I was listening to a discussion on the radio this morning that indicated the report was about 'setting', the BBC report appears to be talking about streaming. I must admit I don't know which this report is actually talking about.

But REALLY what is the issue? I know people will come out with the old 'confidence' thing but come on! It works both ways, if a child was in a lower ability set they may have the opinion of 'hey, I'm going to get myself out of this'!

 

I was in the 'remidial' class at school and probably the 'thickie' sets but does it really matter, no!

 

This report therefore indicates that 6 out of 7 are NOT streamlined/SET!

 

In this day and age we need to establish the can and cant's to be able to do something REAL about it. Not integrate them all and make do!
