Must be a blue moon for facebook to actually apologise. Wonder what they've done that they haven't admitted too? Cynical... moi?!

I have to agree. Transparency isn't their thing. It's the mighty dollar sadly

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't see the problem with the face recognition. It gives a new way for friends to tag friends, your photos are no less private than they were back in the days of selecting friends from a list. Granted, the privacy settings are highly lacking in that access to a picture of me is controlled by the person who posted it, not me, and anyone can tag me without my approval (although I can untag myself) but that's another argument altogether. What FB have done here is change how we tag people, not who we tag or who can see our pictures.

It's also worth pointing out that it doesn't tag people, it suggests tags to the people who uploaded the photo. A lot of people seem to have missed that bit (I'm not suggesting anyone on this thread has!)

There's not necessarily a problem with image recognition, except that it encourages people to tag you when you may not want to be tagged.

 

There is no way of preventing people from tagging you, you have to remove the tags after they've been done... and the damage may have been done by then.

They seem to have too many 'oooops sorry we made everything open' to be anything other than their policy.

I quite agree (as I said above) but that's nothing new and nothing to do with the face recognition.

It helps to reduce the chances of being tagged when you don't want to. You load photos and facebooks says "That's Jane Smith, do you want to tag her?"... the chances are that you'll be tagged. If it doesn't recognise you, there's more chance that you won't be.

Yes, but you get an unlinked name (not linked to a facebook account).

Not convinced. I think if someone wants to tag me, they will - they managed to tag me just fine before the face recognition came in, after all. Face recognition makes it quicker and easier for them, yes, but I don't think the old method was so slow and complex that people didn't tag photos. Maybe I'm wrong.

 

It is odd, mind you, that Places has the option to allow other people to check you in somewhere, but there's no option like that on tagging.

You also have the option in Privacy settings to stop others from checking you in... something I would recommend. You don't get the option to stop tagging.
