Disease Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 We have been told by our LEA (who provide support for SIMS) that we have to install WAV, is ths a capita pushed upgrade or just LEA? Can anyone list any pro's and Con's with WAV? Thanks
Jawloms Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Suffolk have done this. It's not really installing, more a case of turning on. All it means is that when a new address is entered on to SIMS .net, you choose the details of the address from an online database (like when filling in details for car insurance online or whatever) rather than only the addresses it's already aware of.

PhilNeal Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 In SIMS you can have an unvalidated address. Address validation can be from our server which has information supplied by DfE or it can be from the LA's database.

What happens then? It may be that your mate does not have an address registered with the Royal Mail. This can happen when new Houses, Flats etc are built. For a very long time we had a family living in a house built in the garden of their 'other' house. They never registered this new address! Guess what happened when the family moved and one of the houses was sold! Especially as they did not inform us of their house move!

vikpaw Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 There are huge benefits in that it will help to eliminate typos and duplicates, though if you already have very clean data then it's not that much use. I would love to be able to do this with my data but when addresses are in the format of "3 rows down from the big red building" or "palm tree 3" it's not that easy! Slight downside is that it needs web access, but it's not a mandatory requirement so can be done at convenience.

It is best to get the Web Address validation working efficiently as it helps prevent the introduction of duplicate addresses for the same contacts. And hence keeps your sibling links correct! If somebody's address does not validate then get them to check with Royal Mail to see it that address is registered. It may not be and they don't know! The two databases (Capita and LA), that the two services work on, are (or should be) updated from the Royal Mail database from time to time! Edited June 8, 2011 by Sivadam
matt40k Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 If you're in Suffolk, it's so the addresses match up with Suffolk database (EMS\ONE), saves you getting a suspense file back saying it doesn't match. When it works it pretty cool, you add a student, enter just the post code and it picks up the rest, assuming it's already on the system.

The authority where I work only validate using the Capita provided database at present, which is not updated as regularily as I would like. I've also had a call logged with Capita for almost two years now, due to Validated addresses putting some data into incorrect fields, for example Flat Number into House Number, where House Number does not, and should not exist according to the BS7666 rules about PAON's, and SAON's. As mentioned, having correct validated addresses in the system means that the sibling links can be kept, and also the data is cleaner to work with for both school and LA.

Are they concentrating on the National Address Gazetter?? However, the WAV not to have an update for 18 months is disappointing given the amount of new builds popping up around the country. Do Capita have a strategy to use other data apart from the DfE's old set??
