Debain, migration to larger hd.

We've got a debain server hosting both our website and moodle installation. It's been running now for a few years stable until recently.

 

Our moodle has surpassed our hd capacity.

 

Got a spanky new hd for it to sit on is there any quick simple way to ghost move the installation on the new drive? Suggestions please,

You could always use it as a place to start the migration to a new version?

 

Backup the moodle database and files and reapply on the new server?

You should be able to simply copy the old hard drive over to the new - swap the hard drives, boot off a CD, format the newly installed hard drive as ext3, attach the old hard drive via USB and copy the files across. Install your boot loader on the new hard drive and reboot.

Im getting the feeling that it's prob going to be better to install fresh (current) and migrate.

 

If I was to start afresh would you recommend debain again or try another distro? Im fairly limited using nix just tend to google how too's which works wonders.

While im thinking on is there any distro that will sit happy on a hyper v server?

I think only Redhat/Oracle are supported on HyperV.

 

don't worry though - adding a disk to this will be easy we can talk you through it.

 

First shut down your server and add the new disk ( I assume only one disk, your not setting up a RAID array).

When the new disk is in we will set up an LVM volume, format it and mount it somewhere temporarily, move your files over then mount it in the correct place.

 

add the disk then run this

 fdisk -l | grep '^Disk'

I'm just running a full backup of the server/sql's just in case thanks for your assistance It's going to be a few hours to complete will post back when completed.
