Suggestion for firewall to replace our aging cisco pix 501

Now i have a spare GL580 that i can use, but it has no drives and i think the controller has gone boom

So what im thinking is along the lines of using it for running a firewall off a linux usb distro

 

i have looked at Ipcop smoothwall and m0n0wall

Any recommendations on which way i should start.
