What would you choose?

I am upgrading 35 machines around the school which which will run various programs from just DTP to Video Editing and Photoshop.

 

I have a quote between dual core machines and quad core machines, there is a price difference of £50 between them, with a total difference over all of £1750.

 

The question is should I go for the duals and save money to spend elsewhere, or go for the quads and have a bit more longevity.

 

The 2 chips are:

 

DC E5800 3.2ghz

QC Q8300 2.5ghz

I would go with the quad core - the dual core option you have is a pentium

I personally would go with the dual core as long as there is 4Gb DDR3 Ram and the motherboard supports 1333Mhz bus speed you don't require anymore than this as we run 3D graphics and the like which are rather intensive and our dual cores handle this very nicely.

 

Save your money and spend it somewhere else in the school.

@bossman has said my thoughts exactly. The difference is another five machines elsewhere (at least) and I doubt you'll need QC by the time those machines are all knackered anyway.

Dual core, but make sure you also have sufficient RAM (2x2GB should do the job).
