Anyone know if it's possible to do this free and easily and be able to boot properly afterwards? It's an XP image I need to transfer.

I assume you've purchased a new SATA drive and which to migrate your os to it? If you've bought a Segate or a WD Harddrive I believe both companies offer free software for migrating old to new harddrives on their website. I know Segate offer a lite Acronis (used this recently) and WD offer something else (at least they did in 2004). Check out your HD manufacturer website you just might find what you need.

I've used XXClone to do this in the past. It doesn't do a block-for-block copy, it just copies all files using the regular copy mechanism from one drive to the other, then makes the new one bootable.

It's worked for me a couple of times. Just be sure you don't erase your original drive until you've used and rebooted the new one a couple of times to make sure there are no bugs!

Drive image xml can do a hot clone using vss.

Yes I see no reason why you cannot clone from one type of drive to another

Thanks for the suggestions. In the end I ended up using Acronis True Image trial in the end. The others might have worked but only during the process I realised the HD I was writing to, was playing up.
