Dos_Box Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 OK, what do you have lurking in cupboards which 3 years ago the head of ICT said 'We must have it, its essential and the future of ICT!' but is soon cast aside ond forgotten about. I'll start with tablet PC's, small, unwieldy, buggy, expensive and slow. In short total pants and now no one want to touch it, and now no one will admit even putting in the purchasing order!

To be fair it would if it weren't for the giant windows either side of the Gym! We can sometimes use it on Open Evening when its dark out! Andy.

We've turfed that kit out now (and the ISDN line we subscribed to pointlessly for 3 years). Most people couldn't give a toss about video conferencing and the rest need talking round Nomination #2 is Dartfish sports analysis video capturing gubbins. It was bought without considering who would be operating it. The teacher just wants to teach, the kids aren't allowed to use it and PE have no technicians. Voila! Expensive paperweight!

DMcCoy Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Anyone remember CD servers? We had an ancient old SCSI one when I first started, it had an accident with a skip shortly afterwards. Also have a never used £2.5k video conferencing kit. And wireless isn't so great here, the building is a perfect reflector, steel frame, reinforced concrete floors, I get bumped down to 11Mb after one wall!
E1uSiV3 Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 omg lol ive still got an Atlantis(?) CD server (still working i believe) in the corner of the server room, not plugged in of course... I would set up a jukebox, but with MP3s and large cheap storage available it isn't worth the hassle.

I've got one of them under my desk right now that got decomissioned when I upgraded the Computing network to 2k from NT. It was actually quicker to incorporate the software into the Ghost image than it was to get the sodding thing working properly. In fact, the only reason I haven't thrown it out is cos I can't be bothered to shift it (it's making a useful platform for the server's UPS). I think the English department still have an old RM NT4 server in a monolithic tower case, although I don't think it actually works, and someone's lost the keys to the front panel too.
Dos_Box Posted October 18, 2005 Author Posted October 18, 2005 Heh! I had one of those in my first school. They paid £1400 for a cheap hard drive and motherboard, and you had to let the kids 'see' the drive for them to use it (very old type on Win 95) total pap and a waste of cash.

If only they were all at the bottom of the sea . They still turn up at BETT amazingly - Who is still willing to pay serious cash for a fileserver to hold ISO images?
