Hi, I need to get an ethernet cable to another room upstairs, however I need the cable to be able to fit through narrow spaces; I then came across a 'flat' CAT5e cable. A link can be seen below, but I'm sure most of you know what I'm on about:

5m FLAT Cat5e Ethernet/Patch Cable: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

 

If I use a 'flat' CAT5e opposed to a 'normal' CAT5e, will the speed/performance be decreased? The cable will be approximately 35m~

we had a load of flat 1m patch cables from CPC, they wern't bad but havent lasted int he classroom - we used them in the cabs instead. dont remember any problems or issues with speed.

Yup! I have used quite a few of these now.. no speed difference it is still exactly the same the cable is just set differently :)

If the cable doesn't twist the wires inside, they will be a lot more susceptible to interference.

 

Plus a lot. It is twisted pair for a reason, if it is not twisted in pairs inside the cable it will turn the whole thing into a radio transmitter/reciver causing a bunch of interfearence in the cable. The twisted ones from mjs_mjs's links should be fine for short runs though.

What exactly do I need to search for when looking specifically for a 'twisted' ethernet cable?

 

EDIT: I think I'm getting somewhere, is it a UTP or an FTP cable I need?

 

Edit x2: I see FTP cuts out more interference than UTP but they're both twisted.

I'm assuming that FTP is Flat Twisted Pair and UTP is usually Unsheilded Twisted Pair. I'm not sure where you got the interference bit though as UTP is the standard stuff so the flat stuff cutting out more interference is extremely unlikely.

I got the interference bit because FTP (Foil Twisted Pair) has foil wrapped around the wires (as far as I know), thus cutting out more interference.

Ah, given the topic I was assuming that it was flat UTP rather than sheilded stuff, my bad, I have never even seen FTP in use or otherwise.
