Default Gateway Question

The company who setup the I.T in the school put a load of wireless access points in the school and put together a very badly wirrten document.

In the Cisco wireless software, none of the access points have static IP's, even though their document lists their Ip's which are of course wrong now mostly.

I want to put all the access points onto static address, so for example i have one using 172.29.80.25 but when i tick the default gateway it enters it in as 172.29.95.254.

The gatewy should surely be 172.29.80.254 as its on the .80 subnet in its IP. I can change this myself but i just want to be sure that at the moment on DHCP its not using that .95 gateway and by me setting it to static IP and changing the gateway to.80 will break anything.

So is there a way through pinging it that i can find out the current default gateway it is using?

Find out which server gave it a dhcp lease and see what's set up there?

What is the netmask on the access point?

 

You should also be able to somehow get the AP to dump it's routing table which will tell you what the current default route (and gateway) is.

What is your subnet mask set too? If its 255.255.0.0 then the .95 range will still be accessible so the default gateway could be 172.29.95.254, however if its 255.255.255.0 then it will be inaccessible.

Oh and if the mask is 255.255.240.0 it is still correct, as you will have been assined 16 ip ranges from 172.29.80.0 to 172.29.95.254.

 

Also, you could get DHCP to reserve the IP address and get it to always assign the AP the same one effectively making it static, instead of having to reconfigure the AP.

I think the mask will be 255.255.240.0 (/20), that would make sense.

Can't you just ipconfig /all from a workstation and set it to the same as them?

thats what i thought, i just wasn't sure why when you ticked the "static" box it filled the gateway in with this, as if that was the gateway it was currently using.

Just taking a guess....but I would hope that the management network (IP address of the WAP) is different to the DHCP being issued? Maybe that is what the doco is suggesting?

As an example the WAP is on 172.21.3.5 (Network Management VLAN) for management and the DHCP scope (for laptops etc..) VLAN issued via the WAP could be from 172.21.148.1 - 172.21.151.254.....
