Been asked to do a moodle site implementing joomla and drupal ?!?!?!?!?

Moodle/Drupal integrations are quite common, but what do you get from joomla that you don't with drupal (or vice versa)?

I've installed Moodle and Joomla on the same server before without too many problems. This was a test bed for playing with systems rather than a production system. I have a vague memory of playing with Drupal as well but not sure if it was on the same server.

As we develop ideas for student experience, it makes me wonder whether we consider (if it can be done) a series of weemee/iamable characters which students ‘grow’ look after etc for example let’s imagine a shelf above a desk which has a series of ‘characters’ on it (the desk has clock/calendar/computer etc – the ‘links’ to other aspects of VLE) – when you click character 1 (named by child) the link takes you to the Beta Enterprise Vitamins page, which is a log of the enterprise skills the student has displayed, character 2 is an Iamable that links to IAL (seamlessly as single sign on), character 3 is Human Utopia (little Carlo?) character plotting their progress with HU, character 4 is an APP character – plotting their progress against standards in ICT, English, maths etc

 

I dont think they get why a VLE is, well a moodle site anyway :-(

It basically sounds like he wants to re-model Moodle and get pupils involved in the experience / control their learning.... i.e. he has probably seen something similar and doesn't understand the technical reasons why your existing VLE can't do this.

 

I suspect he is after a system very smilar to this: EdLounge: Learn, Work, Play

(I should probably add I don't work for / represent them, but I have set it up at one of my schools before - it gives learners an avatar, 3d world and flash games which they can use in return for spending time on learning resources/completing tasks etc)

 

For the translation aboves - weemees = cartoon avatars (used to be an MSN messenger thing!). Can't help with much of the other odd words though!

Sorry, don't mean to hijack - but we have a moodle site - why would you want to integrate it with Joomla or Drupal? (yuck, please not Drupal - I wrestle with a Drupal website every day)

What will the integration give you or enable you to do that you can't do with moodle alone?

I would have thought that looking at custom/enhanced templates/blocks for Moodle would be a wiser move than bolting on extra systems any-time a feature isn't immediately available. I don't think you'll be doing the 'student experience' any favours by spreading an interface over two or three different products. If you get a decent frontpage and easy to understand structure people should appreciate it a lot more than a pretend desk and a tamagotchi.

I've seen a proof of concept around similar to this ... heavily using sharepoint, silverlight and OpenSIM. the educational ideal was very worthy, but the effort to construct a curriculum and school life around it was not quite worth it yet. It is a lot of work for a very sketchy outline. It relies on all the components you want to use having published APIs to embed into sections of your site, it could also rely on setting up your own Shibboleth system (if all components are authenticated via Shibboleth that is).

 

This is only any good if you have been making use of some of the tools you really want. The school also has to think about whether this sort of development is sustainable. If you build it, who will continue it after you have won the lottery and are jetting round the world?

to be honest I'm not 100% sure what they want and the dfesign brief seems to more elaborate every time they update it!! They are just scaring me at the moment with what they are asking

The way i read that he just wants a visual representation of their progress in different areas. You could do it simply by just using still images or animated gifs. Each avatar could have say 5 different images representing different stages of "growth". Then build a moodle block that displays a different image depending on info from the other sites. (I'm assuming they're seperate sites - I have no idea what Human Utopia or Beta Enteprise Vitamins are) The tricky bit would be getting the info out but it should be doable.

 

I agree a virtual desk is a bad idea. The PC is already on a real desk. And what's on the screen of the virtual PC? The virtual desk?? arrrgghh...

Show them some screenshots of Microsoft Bob and see if they want that instead of Windows 7.

 

Is this for a secondary school? I don't think older kids would like the fisher price approach.
