DFS Shares

I have 2 servers - server 1 and server 2

 

On both servers there is a folder called DFSRoots located on the D drive.

 

In it I have a folder called Templates that houses all the desktop and startmenu icons.

 

This is the structure of what it looks like

D:\DFSRoots\Templates\

D:\DFSRoots\Templates\Staff

D:\DFSRoots\Templates\Pupils

 

The Templates folder is shared as Templates$. Staff as Staff$ and Pupils as Pupils$.

 

I then wanted to share both the staff and pupils folder so that it can be mapped as this:

\\schoolname.local\Staff$ and \\schoolname.local\Pupils$

 

Unfortunately I am not able to access any of the two folder that way but can this way:

\\server1\staff$ and \\server2\staff$ but not with the FQDN.

 

How do I go about doing accessing it by using \\schoolname.local\staff$?

 

I can access it by \\schoolname.local\Templates$\Staff

Are you using the DFS console to define the targets or are you just putting these folders at the DFS root you made? The actual DFS root is just a bunch of folders that sits on the drive and are more like symbolic links. Apologies if I have misunderstood.

I used the console to create the namespace but not bothered with creating targets. Am I supposed to have created targets instead? I didn't see the point of creating targets as the folders/files aren't scattered in all kinds of places, but instead reside on two separate servers in identical folder structure.

You have to define targets, putting folders in won't do anything. The DFSRoots directory is simply a tree of links then, maintained entirely by the DFS software.

I can't seem to get the target links to work the way I want them to work.

 

I create a new folder called 'shotcuts' and then add the targets, e.g. \\server1\shortcuts\pupils$ and \\server2\shortcuts\pupils$

 

When I go to browsing it, it will work like this: \\schoolname.local\shortcuts\pupils and not \\schoolname.local\pupils$

 

I don't think it likes working this way.

Try removing 1 layer, so where you have "shortcuts" call that folder "Pupils" and set the targets on that level

The way it works for me is this - I have directories shared on several server, the namespace is set up on one, and then the shares on the other servers are targetted.

 

Eg.

 

\\app1\share

\\app2\share

 

Each of the above shares are then specified as directories of the target: \\domain.local\mms\share

 

So, mms is the namespace, share is the target which links to the 2 shares on their individual servers.

 

You can't get it to do \\domain.local\share, it won't do that.
