[ms office - 2003] PowerPoint freezes

Hi there

 

We are having a problem with PowerPoint 2003 on one of our laptops. We can open presentations that have been created on other machines and saved to our network but sometimes these lock up. We then have to log off as the laptop freezes.

 

We cannot create presentations as the slides disappear and the menus are greyed out. The laptop then freezes and we have to log off - cannot even get Task Manager up.

 

I reinstalled MS Office (and we also have a converter on for 2007 apps - no conflict on any other pc in school with this though) - this made no difference. Other MS Ofiice apps seem ok.

 

Any ideas?

Can you reproduce the problem?

Can you open the same PPT file which is on the network if saved locally?

Is this issue with all PPT file or is there a pattern?

Is there anything special with these PPT files, i.e embedded movies, music etc...?

I have had a similar problem before, with Powerpoint crashing, and it was caused by something mentioned by Sukh. The PPT which crashed has an embedded movie file. However, when the PPT was moved onto the shared drive for use the movie file wasn't moved with it. When powerpoint opened, it looked for the movie file and crashed. I now put the PPT, if I know it's going to be moved onto a shared drive or used by multiple people, in a folder and put any music files or movie files with it. That way the link to the files will always remain.

Also, check you've got a sensible, working printer set as your default - it can go a bit la-la otherwise, guess it's trying to work out page size etc.
