[android] android 3.0 proxy config over wifi

Does anyone know if android 3 will support proxy configuration over wifi? This is the one thing that is putting me off getting an android phone as i have read that the current android software doesnt support it. Edited April 21, 2011 by ZeroHour

There's is a droid proxy program in the market place. Also the popular cyanogen mod has proxying built in. Or you could just run with a transparent proxy

Who knows - Google has a wall of silence on the issue.

 

No standard Android device will run any proxy program but if your root your device I believe that they will.

 

As said, Cyanogen has a proxy facility but its too naff to use (you have to switch it off and on - can't automatically associate it with school APs/switch it off for home )

 

Its the one big gaping hole in Android

 

If your 3G coverage in school is OK then in practice you won't actually need it but if not....

Android 3.0 is currently only tablets. 2.3 is latest version for phones and they likely to get 2.4 before any major jump.

 

The only android 3.0 device available in the US xoom doesn't have a native proxy. The market app is required.

 

The Asus transformer out 6th-18th April does have a custom bits over standard honeycomb (live wallpapers look great), no word on whether this has any native proxy settings though.

I dont see how they can leave proxy out for much longer and still survive in the business market.

I have the app for proxy on my Advent Vega and its unstable to say the least! Doesnt work well at all.

The lack of manageable, built-in control of proxy settings means that I cannot recommend android devices in schools. Even if we consider a solutions that hooks into a segmented section of the school wireless network, it is still likely to need to have control over proxy settings. the only other alternative I have spoken with people about is that the managed wireless system also operates as a transparent proxy (I know Ruckus and Cisco can ... pretty sure Meru and Extricom can't but happy to be told otherwise) or the school has a device in the middle to operate as a transparent proxy ... remembering that this will be additional cost to many schools, either in hardware or time for folk to configure and support the kit / solution.

I was shocked to find my HTC Desire HD running Android 2.2 does not support a system-wide proxy. I very nearly sent it back after upgrading from an iPhone 3G.

 

It is such a shame as the phone is fantastic (except for battery life!).

Got my transformer yesterday. very, very good build quality.

 

Loving 3.0.1, but a bit of a google beta release again, but still very good. No native proxy, proxy app is on market tho.

honeycomb 3.1 supports proxy as do some versions of 2.3.3 i believe

Yeah 3.1 now supports different proxies for each ssid.
