Ben_Stanton Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Hi guys, I have a 2.5" drive that was dropped from a substantial height. At first, it didn't spin up and just 'beeped' - yes, it actually beeped. I assumed it was a sticky head, physically on the platter. Open the casing, bingo - it was the arm 'locked' into place over the platter. I freed that, gave it some juice and the disk now spins - but the head now flicks about in the normal failed hard drive manner. Flicks to half way, get a clonk and back again a few times. Then the disk spins down. Any chance of getting the data back you think? Anybody got any words of wisdom? Or - maybe I could transplant the platter into a drive of the same make/model? If so - anybody got a Seagte Momentus 5400.6 500GB drive laying about? Cheers guys Ben
chazzy2501 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Nope, no chance. The second a platter is exposed to the air, its toast. With Physical damage like this a clean room is required and some heavy coin!
Ben_Stanton Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Hmmmm. I've had similar situations and actually ended up using the drive for years without failure, damage etc.. Maybe I was lucky hey. I actually did this in an artificial 'clean room' and even wore pretty blue rubber gloves. Cheers anyway. I'll dump it after giving it an even bigger whack with a sledge hammer

SYNACK Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Short of data recovery you are probably stuffed, the newer drives are not as easy to resurect as the old ones as due to their much denser nature there is much more variation in the platters and so the circut bords are set to configure uniquely to match the platters. Sometimes you can sort this but this is more the league of the big data recovery houses though.
Brpilot99 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Just a thought .. could you not take the electronic board out of a known good identical drive .. install it onto the bad one and see if it now works? I did this on a Fujistu drive years ago and it got the drive working again as the fault was elecronic rather than mechanical ...
