Anyone created a account on facebook for school

Looking to use it as a form of media to get news out and was wondering if anyone had any experience of this

 

From what I have read I understand it would be a facebook page we would have.

 

How secure are they as we want students to "like" us but wouldnt want its avaliable to suspect people shall we call them!

Would I be better setting it up as a user then I can choose who can see the information??

 

Any advice/tips would be awesome!

Sunderwood, can you see the users who like your page?

Its one of the things the head is asking and having never had a page for a business before I am not too sure

If you want to select who goes on it a group would be best.

 

Why dont you want other people on?

 

A Page is for like public information. For example: "School closed today becuase of snow"

A page you cant approve who can view it. A group its possible to do.

 

But with a group when you update something it doesnt show on the users news feed like it would a page.

Wrongly or not what has been asked is we want some way to be able to get evidence of bullying within the academy there is a group of students using facebook on their mobiles during the day (yes mobiles are banned!!)

The idea is if the students followed us would that give us access to see what they are posting on their own wall?

 

Or has anyone got any ideas other than my suggestion that people get stricter on mobile use and punish students found on them during the day!

That wouldnt work. If you tried to view the students walls it would be like any other none friend viewing the walls. As a page you can see it. So it would be pointless making the page.

 

But if you made a standard facebook profile, and they add you, providing they have not used privicy settings you can see the wall. Also that way you can pick who is your friend. It will also show on this accounts newsfeed what the students are posting all in one place.

thanks, when i enter the school name as the name facebook has a bit of a fit saying i should use a page?!?!

Ill have a look once the kids have left the building its a bit mad atm!

Facebook privacy settings are such that you give access to friends, friends of friends or everyone... unless the student has rubbish privacy settings having them join a group won't help you to spy on their facebook activity.

 

If it did work, as soon as word got out that accounts are being monitored, the students would leave the group!

 

Be aware that most schools have students that under age to have facebook accounts (13), so a school should never use facebook as the main, or even A main, method of communicating with students.

We use Facebook as a means of communication for parents and former students. However, we do have a lot of our students on our page as friends. The majority of the information we post includes links to our school newsletter, school holiday reminders and school closures etc. We have around 1,500 and it seems to work well and hasn't up to now been abused.

You can see who is following you yes. But you cant control who does and you cant see there walls like you want to.

Set up with a few things in mind:

 

Stopping the legions of pages set up by pupils,

Quick contact with (albeit not all) parents,

Embracing social media rather than treating it as the bad guy.

 

We have a few rules too, only myself and the headteacher have the password, absolutely no pictures of pupils on there, and any current pupils found 'liking' the pages are booted off and reported, seeing as they shouldn't be on FB anyway.

Has anyone managed to post things to their page using the Graph API?

I am looking into this at the moment and seem to be having authentication issues with it. The documentation makes it sound simple for Groups, Profiles and Applications but for Pages it is a bit ambiguous!

I think I said it earlier too. Joining a group or liking something on facebook does not give other people permission to view your wall. (Facebook must have made a mistake there!)

 

However if your students have lax privacy settings, allowing people who are not their friends to see their stuff, you may be able to see their walls...

 

If staff or students need encouragement to get their privacy settings right, feel free to circulate the doument in my signature below.

AFAIK, being a member of a group/liking something doesn't give you permissions to view someone who is in the same group's wall, unless their privacy settings are set very open.
