Less tax paid, more into the criminal coffers and more ill people on the NHS due to more poisonous substances in the fake "tobacco". I find it strange that you wag your finger at the naughty smokers yet you think its good that the alcoholics are exempt from any tax rises this time round. Cigarettes affect more than the individual smoking them. Sure, we now have smoking bans and the like, but how about when I walk down the street and the guy in front of me is smoking, and his smoke is going straight in my face? That's not healthy. However, you have a slight point on alcohol. We do have a major problem with alcohol abuse in the UK with binge drinking and alcohol fuelled violence. I don't think alcohol duty is the way to resolve this though. Enforcing minimum pricing for alcohol would be a start.
sted Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 You have a credit card bill of £100,000 and have two options: - paying the minimum off each month and having more to spend elsewhere because of it, but knowing it will take you many years to pay off because the interest will pretty much cancel out what you pay - paying a lot of it off each month, meaning it might be tougher to afford things, but knowing that once it is paid off quicker, you are clear of debt? paying less off the deficit may be less stressful to the economy in the short run, but i'm sure someone here said the interest is something like £1million a day. so the longer we leave it, the more we will end up paying. and i usually dont agree with parties blaming each other, but as the previous govmt were in power for a long time, they had more than enough chance to change things, this government is making the changes that make them unpopular but is dragging us out of debt all true but if you tax less you may get peiople/business spending/investing more so get more actual money in is a million pounds a pay in govrnment numbers actually that much tbh? if it wasnt being paid to banks in interest how much difference would it actually make? id bet not a lot really has to be said im not a fan of teh tories but then last time they were in power they did pretty much shut down industry in my home county and one of the firast things they did in power this time was cancel a loan to one of those same industrys

Or, 6 new high schools a day, if you pay about £20m per school... It would pay for a barrage across the Severn, which would provide cheap electricity for 1/5th of the country. Yes, I'm being pedantic but I feel the smokers get a very "holier than thou" attitude directed against them.There are some DOCTORS who say there is no evidence passive smoking is harmful. BTW, I don't smoke, just passing my observations as a devils advocate.

Sorry but a few fringe doctors does not change the consensus that passive smoking harms people. The only people who have come out to say there are no links, as far as I can see, have been funded by the tobacco industry... The 'holier than thou' attitude is down to the pressure they put on our healthcare system, and the overall negative effects they have on people.

(can't recall them all but one scale was 2500 - 3000 PPM, mine was 2506PPM.. The others were a similar story Buses on the other hand....

When I'm cycling toward a bus at the bus stop & the driver pulls away because "he/she has'nt seen me", & I get a good lung full of diesel smoke. I believe there are also a shortage of beds due to cancer patients - a large amount of which will be Lung related Anyway..
