Hi,

I have a problem with USB drives on our network (XP network, Server 2008)

When users plug in a normal USB flash memory stick, they are accessible fine and appear under "devices with removable storage" in my computer.

If a user connects a portable harddrive (that is a standard 2.5" usb connected ide style harddrive - like those by Western Digital), they get an "Access Denied" error. This style of drives appear in my computer under "Hard Drives."

Any ideas on what is wrong? I assume it is something in group policy but no idea where.

Thanks for your time.

Do you have a GPO on for trusted sites? Sometimes blocks removalable media, not sure if that'd count HDD but not USB. Worth checking?

No trusted stuff set up and we are using Kaspersky.

This shows the portable hard drive error when trying to access. Same if I go via explore, run etc.

This shows a normal USB drive which works fine.

you might want to run an rsop on the affected users and check for this policy setting

user config\admin templates\windows components\windows explorer\preent access to drives from my computer

i would guess its set to deny all rather than deny say restrict a,b,c,d

and as its a hard drive rather than a mass storage device its being blocked

Not Western Digital.

Checked the GPO. They are all set to not configured in:

user config\admin templates\windows components\windows explorer\preent access to drives from my computer

File-system permissions? The USB flash drives will most likely be formatted with FAT32, while the HDDs will be NTFS - perhaps this is why the latter is not accessible?

What do you see when you look at the security tab on the drive's properties?

No need to re-format. Try running the following from the Command Prompt (where e:\ is the letter of the drive you wish to reset the permissions of).

cacls e:\ /t /c /g Everyone:F
