Folks,

Early heads-up that I am recruiting another pre-sales tech at our Leeds office. Many of you may have spoken to one of the guys in this team if you have looked at using Smoothwall for firewall or filtering.

Basic outline of the role:

* Visiting potential customers with a member of our sales team to discuss their security needs

* Giving webex style demos

* lurking on edugeek and helping people

* Delivering product training

* Designing and installing smoothwall deployments from small schools to full LAs

* Hacking around with the product

* Testing new stuff

* Working on blocklists/new blocking rules

Key skills:

* fully functional brain, or compatible

* know one end of network cable from the other

* Able to find your way round an AD, understand all that OU business etc

* Experience of filters, firewalls etc. a bonus

* Ability/desire to learn

Also, this job involves a bunch of travelling, which is much easier if you can drive, so a driving licence is borderline essential. Additionally, you are likely to end up at various points around the country (and indeed worldwide, we have offices on both coasts of the US), so spending a couple of nights away each month is expected.

Please PM or ask in thread for more details.

...an addition - don't be afraid to apply for "lack of experience"! Salary questions are difficult - i don't like to post on an open board which upwards of 20 of my colleagues read ;) but I can answer by PM. It's not "NM of a big school" and its not "Junior technician" but possibly somewhere in between?!

Goes without saying, any opportunity to work with the Smoothwall team should not passed upon by anyone looking for that next step.

Since we all only use about 10% of our brains, there can't be many people who will fullfil #1 of the key skills...

Ok, I'll bite, what is the difference between the ends of a network cable :D

Seriously though if I was in the UK I would look at applying as you guys do seem to be much more on to it than a lot of companies I have encountered. Good luck in your search.

Would being a leeds fan be advantageous?

100% - we're short on that front, i'm a leeds fan myself, but of my colleagues we've a geordie a manc(!) and a b-burn. Bad times :)

Also office is within half a mile of Elland Rd.

568A and 568B ?

Only if it is a crossover, a standard network patch lead is straight through and so the same at both ends, crossover cables are largely dead technology with auto MDI/MDX.

But I will have to tell myself off for draging this thread off topic in a minute :D

Hey, it keeps my thread bumped, I won't argue ;)

Also this is the kind of BS conversation we like in our office, so if you wwre in the uk i'd be after your cv :)

If things were a little different, i'd jump at the chance. Would love to work with you guys.

Think salary might be on the low side for me too though ;)

What sort of start date is it?

I see this as more of a techie role right? It's not technical sales , more support of the sales...? What's the scope for moving between the two..

vik,

Start date - we needed someone in january :) so ASAP.

It is a highly technical role. The name contains "pre-sales" but that only really represents the fact that we work very closely with the lads & lasses in sales, and we're a more "outgoing" and "people friendly" set of techs (which is why I like to recruit edugeeks). Chance of moving into sales ~0% as its a different mindset.

Also, if anyone wants to recommnd a friend, and we hire them... I am sure I can fish out some sort of monetary reward.

The role is most likely non-transferable I'd guess as the Sales lads and lasses are Leeds Based. Southampton is the developers and gurus that are there when you get blonde IT Managers....
