No we don't get full speed. There's network congestion at the LEA level (mainly their server farm of proxy servers) and where the LEA network joins SuperJanet at Lancaster University.

Plus there's the added problem of the rest of the internet being on slower uplinks than us.

It's quite speedy in the summer though when everyone else has cleared off.

1000mb download speed is crazy insane ! Makes our 10mb look like an atari console :)

Worse still is that we pay like £10,000 a year for our 10mb and you only pay £4k for the 1000mb :(

Just think of all the lovely stuff I could download with that kind of speed !!

Geoff your school has a 1GB interent connection?

Yes.

wow that must cost a fortune.

It's provided by CLEO + Lancs LEA. It's a flat rate cost based on the number of students. I don't have the figures to hand but it works out at about £4k a year for our school IIRC.

thats not on the microwave system surely!?

I'd rather they didn't implement a 10Mb to 20Mb upgrade and started adding binary newsgroups again.

Also it's appalling they can just drop channels like that and not offer any get out clause - I got cable last May for Kerrang, MTV2, Sky1, E4 and FilmFour. I don't watch music enough to justify it, E4 and FilmFour went to freeview and now I lose Sky one, all in a year and with no option to leave until May this year.

I'll miss Sky Sports News ... but I have become bored of Sky|One recently ... nothing I really want to watch and I would rather just go through my boxsets of things, or watch whole seasons from Virgin Central.

From what I understand, Virgin Central offers no more than you get with the top package's on demand stuff.

According to the Virgin Newsgroups.

So as I'll be looking at ditching cable and hence moving ISPs, does anyone mind if I start a thread where people can ask/answer questions on what other ISPs offer? In both terms of speed, cost and included newsgroups?

my m8 here phoned up to complain about loosing sky,to try and get some freebies, he got passed to disconnections and before he could get a word in edgeways they'd told him they'd arrange to pickup the equipment, put the phone down and disconnected everything within 15mins!

Lots of this is down to virgin angry that sky brought shares in itv so trying to get back at sky.

But when it comes to it both parties are losing out but think ntl customers will lose out more...

Anyway problem with virgin is can't get it around here that is cable company but saying that do say it hard to get a virgin in Leicester
