Service Pack 1 + WSUS Warning!

Just a word of warning to everyone out there, our WSUS server has started pushing out Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and since then we've had a number of machine bomb out after rebooting.

 

Black screen with the Windows logo and the words:

"Fatal error C0000034 applying update operation 282 of 117950 (_00000...)"

 

So far I've had to re-image 12 machines (luckily no real loss/damage yet! ... NOT looking forward to tomorrow morning tho!)

WSUS doesn't just "push out" updates unless you tell it to, or you enable automatic approval. Nobody in their right mind would enable automatic approval for service packs.

Luckily, I put SP1 on our one and only Win 7 laptop manually!

I'm having this issue as well. I have manually installed sp1 on my own laptop with no issues. Were the computers you had the error on running 32 or 64 bit versions?

I had manually installed the Service Pack on a few PCs/Notebooks without any issues so I figured it was safe... bah

It seems to be working fine on 32bit systems. One the other techs here found these links. I havent tried this yet myself.

I dont know what could be causing the issue.

Hmm... may be an idea to not update to SP1 via WSUS/SCCM and just phase it in via rebuilds....

Note that the deployment of Windows 7 with SP1 is not yet officially supported on SCCM 2007 - but I can say that my own experience suggests it will work fine - we just treated it the same as Windows 7 as far as SCCM OSD is concerned and it seems to deploy out perfectly happily.

Oh I am just going through a battle now with a small company whom has no computers at the moment and no recovery points to go back to either! :'(

 

I am trying this at the moment, but it does not seem to find anything on the C: Drive!

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

 

01. Reboot your computer while it's starting up.

 

02. When your computer starts up again, choose the option "Launch Startup Repair"

03. When the Startup repair starts, click cancel.

 

04. After you click cancel it will show a box. Click "Don't Send"

05. Click the link "View advanced options for recovery and support"

 

06. In the new window click Command Prompt at the bottom.

07. In Command Prompt type this and press enter: %windir%\system32\notepad.exe

 

08. Notepad will open. In notepad go to File-->Open.

 

09. Change the type of files notepad views from .txt to All Files (see pic)

10. Now in Notepad, go to C:\Windows\winsxs\ (or whichever drive Windows is installed on)

 

11. In that folder, find pending.xml and make a copy of it

 

12. Now open the original pending.xml (it will load really slow because the file is huge)

 

13. Press CNTRL+F and search for the following exactly: 0000000000000000.cdf-ms

 

14. Delete the following text (yours will be a little different):

Your PC might not have all 3 sections of code (, , ). Just make sure you delete section "Checkpoint" and whatever other sections have "000000000000000.cdf-ms". They will be right next to eachother.

 

15. Save the file, close notepad, close command prompt, restart your computer.

 

 

Once your computer starts up, do a normal startup (it may stall for 5-10 minutes at the "starting windows" screen, but leave it going) and the Service Pack will install some more stuff and restart a few times and then everything should be working! For some people, it reverts everything and cancels the service pack installation. For other people, the service pack installation completes. Either result is fine.

 

I may have to rebuild 7 machines! booo!

I had similar issues with XP SP3, and started only manually updating as and when. Finally rolled it out with WSUS after a year or so. Will probably do the same with SP1 - I'm not an early adopter when it comes to service packs.

That is the fix i tried to do earlier, but i have a bunch of HP machines with OEM installs on my hands and they seem to be screwed! and they don't show any form of Directory Structure on C:\

I take that back., I just tried it on another machine and it worked fine! the windows dir is not on C:\ it was in E:\ randomly! :~)
