Do you have a Windows 7 CC4 network?

Our school is looking to move forward with our aging (yet surprisingly well working) CC3 network in the next couple of years. Ideally, due to a small number of technical staff we'd like to keep it easy to manage, and CC4 fits this bill nicely. I've commissioned and managed a fair amount of CC4 networks, a couple with the odd one or two windows 7 machines, but we'd like to see a network running entirely windows 7 on CC4. Primary/secondary isn't an issue (ours is a secondary), we just want to get an idea of performance on a live system in comparison to XP stations.

 

So if you wouldn't mind sparing an hour or so to show myself and our Network Manager around, ideally when the network is in use, it'd be hugely appreciated ;)

Just migrated Monday gone from CC3 and it has gone remarkably well.

 

With lots of forward planning we achieved it in 9 days straight, involving new servers, virtualisation and lots of hard work it has been received very well by our staff.

we'r cc4 and found that the win7 workstations out performed win XP of the same spec in some cases. I'm not the net man so unfortunately i cant offer to show you around. most of our clients (that I would say work) are dual core with 4GB of RAM. the win 7 with 512 and single cores are CRAP. most teachers have dual core with 2GB RAM and there pretty nippy win 7.

 

we still have 1 or 2 XP workstations purely because we haven't found the time to swap them over or because certain software don't run well on win7.

I found XP to be appalling on CC4 compared to Vista. I understand Win7 is even better performing which is something I am looking forward to :)

I agree with the XP comment. I'm building a few workstations to Windows 7 to test our packages on before we make the move to Windows 7 hopefully later this year. So far most of the packages have gone on without any problems.

Cheers folks, this is what I believed to be the case - we need to weigh up our options and performance is always at the top of our minds too (it's amazing how many times staff keep complaining that their station takes 20 minutes (well, 3 if they don't exaggerate) to log on - when the lowest spec systems are dual core pentiums with 2GB of ram! Also looking at replacing hard drives now with the Seagate hybrids if our test subject doesn't fall over - the idea is fantastic for an educational network, commonly used programs cached to the SSD part for optimum performance, so thats pretty much everything in school :D

Windows 7 is certainly far better on CC4 than XP - we skipped Vista so can't comment there. We only run Windows 7 on machines equal to or better than Core 2 and 2GB ram, as when we tried on some P4/512mb it didn't exactly show the desired results (worse than XP by a mile). I'd say our XP/7 ratio is now 70/30.

 

We were a CC3>CC4 school as soon as CC4 came out so have been there, done that and got t-shirt with everything else on top! Windows 7 isn't without its flaws though on CC4 and some strange behaviour is being observed which is somewhat concerning.
