Windows Server - OEM / COA licencing question

Hi there,

 

Just a question about OEM licencing on Dell servers. We purchased a number of servers from Dell with the operating systems on them (Wind 2003 standard R2). We have since virtualised these machines following our migration to 100% virtual.

 

The COA on the servers states Windows 2003 standard R2 with no mention of OEM on the label. Does this mean that the OS is not an OEM version and therefore we are able to transfer the licence?

You have P2V an OEM machine, the COA stays the same. You are still licensed.

If you bought them with the O/S pre-installed it will be OEM.

 

You are legally allowed to virtualize an OEM license, but you can't transfer it away from its original hardware, so its no good in a high availability environment (SAN).
