I have since installed SP2 on the box and it hasn't made any difference. If anything it has made it worse! I have also tried it with a different physical network card in the server but this seems to be the same.

Hi All, Just an update as we are making a bit of progress. We managed to get wireshark up and running and captured the information. Whilst this worked we struggled to interpret anything useful from the captured packets. We tried looking at the patch levels of two win 2008 servers as they were both experiencing the same issues. We patched one of the servers but this still made no difference. We managed successfully to get the FTP jobs to run without a problem by setting the NIC on the server (within Windows 2008) to 100mb. This works seamlessly now. I have since tried to manually set the switch ports to 1gb and the NIC thinking that it may be an autosensing issue but this failed to work either. At least I am getting somewhere at long last and I can try and get my FTP off site replication back up and running again. Anyone any ideas? Could it be related to the new networking stack in win 2008 (Although it works fine on a windows 7 desktop going over a 100mb link). When running the FTP job it always fails between 2:30 and 3:00 minutes after starting at starts to spawn new connections

Hi, Kmount, it is a site to site vpn. The vpn is working fine as we have a number of connections/services running over it with no problems. The connection is fine and staying connected. When i ftp from my desktop (in same subnet to the same devices) it works fine and is stable. Not sure about the routing tables, but the majority of services across the VPN are working ok so I guess so. Sukh, I will have a look at capturing the traffic. Other servers/desktops work fine. Ive had the same job running from my desktop overnight and it has been stable Stumped! Thanks for the tips anyway! Need a sanity check :-)

Hi there, Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice i am having with a strange FTP connection problem. I have a 2008 r2 server running at one site. This is a backup server and I have a scheduled FTP job setup to transfer backups to another site through a router, over VPN, to an FTP server on another of our sites. All was working on for several weeks and now we are experiencing connection problems with any FTP client from the server (to any FTP server). Here's what is happening. I am able to connect filezilla to the FTP server and I retreive the directory listing without any problems. I then start to upload any file and after anywhere between 2-4 minutes the connection/speed seems to drop. The speed then starts to crawl and eventually reconnects. The client then reconnects several times before the FTP server states too many connections. I initially thought this was a firewall issues so carried out a couple of checks. I have checked the firewall rules and all are setup as they were with rules to allow for FTP access through the firewall. So far I have ruled out any isses with the FTP server by connecting to the server from the same site as the FTP server - works ok. I was able to connect to the FTP server ok from a desktop between the two sites. This is what I thought was a little odd as from other machines (win7) the FTP client running across the same site works ok going through the firewall. I then tried connecting to a second FTP server from one site to another. This didn't work either and indicates an issue with the server. Connecting out to any FTP server (using any FTP client) doesn't seem to want to work. I've disabled the windows firewall on the server but this hasn't made a bit of difference. As a long shot ive just been and changed the network cable and switch port. Anyone any ideas on how to trouble shoot this further as I'm running out of ideas. Thanks in advance

Hi All, Quick question. We have just purchased a couple of Dell r710s and discovered they do not come with the internal SD card slots as standard and this is an add on module. There is however an internal USB port that we could use. We are looking to run esxi on these boxes with esxi running on the removable storage and the VMs running from a SAN. Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using the internal USB slot instead of the SD card. Anyone any experiences? Thanks in advance

Hi there, Just a question about OEM licencing on Dell servers. We purchased a number of servers from Dell with the operating systems on them (Wind 2003 standard R2). We have since virtualised these machines following our migration to 100% virtual. The COA on the servers states Windows 2003 standard R2 with no mention of OEM on the label. Does this mean that the OS is not an OEM version and therefore we are able to transfer the licence? Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any software recommendations to store the licencing information/inventory? I am after some way of recording our software licences online and uploading invoices/proof of purchases. We are a fast member and have previously looking at their SAM tool but we will not be renewing out membership this year. We are looking for something that is online/saas so it is easily accessible in the event of a DR situation. Alternatively we would consider looking a software if we can replcate/backup the software easily enough. What are people using to record their software licences/inventory Thanks in advance

Hi All, I've been trialling a product called Syncback and whilst it is ok. It meets most of our requirements it is missing one vital feature, a progress/status update. The scheduling functions are passed off to the windows scheduled task and other than an email at the end of the job we cannot see where it is upto. Anyone any recommendations for any FTP software that meets the following requirements: - runs as a service - ability to schedule jobs - set bandwidth limits (preferably to reduce the upload throughout the working day) Anyone recomend any products?

I'm looking at replicating the data to and from a QNAP device. DFS does tick all the boxes but difficult to implement between my NAS boxes. I'm going down the route of scheduled FTP jobs (seems the easiest at the moment). I was looking at torrent files but takes an age to build the torrent due to the size of the files. Now just need to find an FTP client that runs as a service (for scheduling) and could email me reports in the event of a failed job.

Hi there, I need to get our backups syncronised between our main and DR site. We have two qnap devices and we have tried the inbuilt replication but the management isn't to great. The nas software was hammering the upload on our connection and causing the internet to crawl. We need something to syncronise the vmware backup repositories (500gb+) with something that allows us to manage the bandwidth allocation. I need to set the transfer not to use all of the available upload. Any recommendations?

Hi there, I have just purchased a TS-859U+ and I have been busy getting a seperate storage network up and running. I am having a problem getting an ip address working the second NIC on my QNAP device (the IP on the main network is working fine). I have a seperate storage network (seperated by a different VLAN) up and running going through a switch. I have assigned all vmware hosts and a physical backup server an IP on the storage network (10.0.0.xx). All is working fine and I am able to ping each IP from each of the various host machines. I have another port on the switch (configured on the same VLAN) for the second NIC from my qnap box. I have the primary NIC on the main network (192.168.1.xx) and I am using this to manage the device. I assigned an IP from the storage network onto the second NIC but I am unable to ping the IP address from any devices on the storage network. I have tested the switch port and cable with a different device and this is working fine. I am able to set the test laptop up with the same IP address (on same cable and port) and I am able to ping other devices fine. It is just when I try and ping the IP on the second NIC when it is cabled in. I have configured the QNAP NIC 2 with the same IP address, set the subnet and left the gateway blank (as per other devices on the same network) but I am unable to ping the IP. I have tried changing the default gateway for the QNAP from NIC1 to 2 as a long shot but still no joy! Any one any tips on how to get this up and running. All seemed to be going along pretty smoothly and this last task should of been pretty straightforward.

Over what network/backbone are you backing them up as the processing rates look pretty fast? Just building my infrastructure now with a seperate iscsi network for lan free backups. Waiting for my iscsi storage to turn up tomorrow.

Anyone here any experience of using vranger? Been trialling the software here but struggled after moving datastore offsite and struggled to get full backup to continue as incrementals. every slight change in the backup job seems to want to redo a full backup. I've just managed to get the backend iscsi infrastructure in place for the lan free backup. I'm about to start looking at veeam to see how that works out? Anyone out there who has tried both out? Hi, I've managed to get it sorted now. The vmware host is connected into port 21 (Labelled as a trunk on the switch front). All of the data was running on one untagged vlan originally but we now need to use a couple more. In order to get it working I had to carry out another additional task. I had to go into VLAN > Port Config. Put in the VLAN id I just created and then highlight the ports (Excluding trunk 21) and submit the changes. Can ayone help me with a similar issue on the same switch (GSM7224) . I am trying to create a seperate VLAN to run our wireless network and I am struggling to create a trunk port (to use alongside vmware hosts). I have two ports (1 and 2) and set these up as VLAN5. When I plug devices into each port I am able to ping either device without a problem. All fine and good. I am then trying to setup port 21 (Marked with a T on the switch - trunk I presume) to carry the default LAN1 (deafult config and haven't had to do anything) and my new VLAN5. In the vmware host I've already setup the port group to use VLAN 5. I've tried it as it is as the port is marked as a trunk port thinking it would carry the VLAN5 data by default. I was unable to ping from port 1 or 2 across the trunk port to my vmware host. In order to create the VLAN here's the steps I have take: In webui > System > Switch > VLAN > Config. I created a new VLAN 5 and included ports 1 and 2 (working fine between ports) and then tagged port 21 (to be used as the trunk port). In the default VLAN1 I excluded port 1 and 2. Hi there, I am currently looking at our DR strategy and looking to phase out tapes and moved to disk based backup with offsite storage. I need to backup a full weekly backup of about 700gb. I am looking for any recommendations for hardware. Ideally I am after an ISCSI device that I can split 50/50 as vmware datastores for 20-30 light VMs and a backup partition. I have two sites and ideally I would like to have a box at either end and replicate between the two devices. We currently have an EMC AX4 at one end and I tempted to look at EMC options but fear they may be quite pricey to enable replication features. Anyone any experiences I have been looking at the top end qnap devices but on their forums people saying iscsi is flakey and need to use NFS. Anyone any hardware recommendations? Happy to look at all options but any NAS options would need to be bullet proof as I have had far too many experiences with dodgy nas devices!

Just an update on this one. I'm still having the problems trying to RDP onto the windows 2003 servers. I have tested out connecting to SQL servers in domain B with users from domain A with no problems. I added the user from A to the SQL logins on the sql server in B and I am able to point my sql management studio at the box and authentication with the domain A user. I have also managed to setup the same thing with a vmware vcenter. Anyone any ideas on the windows 2003 error?

Hi All, After sorting one issue earlier on this morning I'm now onto the next one. I'm having trouble getting a trust relationship up and running between two sites. I have a one way selective authentication up and running and this went fine. The trusts are defined and there are no errors in the event logs. Ive setup the dns forwarders between the two sites. Both domains on either sites resolve to working domain controllers. I then tried to get RDP access with a user from domain A on domain B. I set the user up as a local admin on the server, allowed the user remote access and set the user to allow authentication access in AD. When i try and log into the windows 2003 server domain A is listed and I select this domain and enter my credentials. I just then get a grey screen for approx 2 mins then i get the error on screen: The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The remote procedure call failed. In the event log: Logon rejected for domain A\user. Unable to obtain Terminal Server User Configuration. Error: The remote procedure call failed. The strange thing is that when I try the same thing on a Windows 2008 server it lets me login to the server using the user from domain A. Everything is setup the same apart from it being on a different server and operating system. Anyone come across anything similar?

No, two different subnets I am able to ping both DCs from either site without a problem

Managed to sort the domain issues. Both domains now resolve to working IPs on domain controllers. Just need to get to the bottom of the RPC error when trying to log in. I'm trying to log into a server in domain B with a user from domain A. This user has admin rights on the server and Allow Authentication has been setup in AD on the server I am trying to get into. After logging in via RDP i get a grey screen for about 1 min and then I get an error saying RPC connection failed. This is in the event log: Logon rejected for DomainA\user. On Domain A ive just had a look and mydomain.lan goes to the current DC. On domain B, mydomain.com, goes to a server that is no existent. I will look to get this repointed now.
