Remote turn on PC - how ?

Hi,

 

I wasn’t to sure where to put this topic, so it ended up here. Please move Mod if you feel it's in the wrong place.

 

To the question. I would like to turn a computer on via a schedule, like a scheduled task shutdown. I know on some motherboard there’s an option in the bios to do this. If the bios doesn’t have this option is there any other way I can go about doing this?

 

I can’t give any details on the computer at present, hopefully next week I can. I'm quite certain the bios won’t have the power on option and that’s why I’m asking if there are any alternatives.

if it supports wake on lan (and people dont turn the wall sockets off) then yes various bits of software/script can do this

If its a client in a client server network have you looked at Wake on Lan?

If the machine is in Hibernate or Standby rather than being shut down, you could also configure a task in the Task Scheduler with the "Wake the computer to run this task" option selected.

Sted and Jamo. I thought wake on lan was the name of the option that some get in the bios? Is that correct? Is it still possible to achieve this even if I don’t have the wake on lan option in the bios?

 

AngryTechnician, I like your idea. I presume since this is part of windows I won’t need anything special to achieve this? (Apart from setting the schedule) I may use this if I can’t find a way of power on completely via a schedule.

Sorry forgot to say. Yes Jamo. The client is on the network that runs server 2008 R2 and the client it's self is running windows 7 enterprise

its an option in the bios (and without it it probably wont work) but some bios's actually have wake up times in them

Thanks, I'm aware of some bios's having the option. I was hoping there might be a way of scheduling a power on using software/hardware if the computer in question doesn't have this bios option.

It should be quite easy to set up.

 

1) First find the WAKE ON LAN option in your BIOS. Its usually in the Power Management section, and enable it.

 

2) Next you need to get the MAC address of your computer. There are loads of ways to harvest this.

 

3) Then just find a Wake on Lan program. Personally I use Gammodyne's WOL: Gammadyne's Free DOS Utilities

 

4) Create a simple Batch file containing the computers you want to wake:

5) And finally go to Scheduled Tasks on a server or computer that's always on. Select your batch file and choose the time you want to turn them on.

With regards to point 1 - If it is a dedicated network card you may also find wake on LAN options from the advanced tab of the network card properties

 

 

Rough run down ref the power management and wake on lan settings on the network card ( I normally get to these through the properties in device manager for the network card )

The only requirement I know of is that the BIOS needs to support APM 1.2 or later. This standard is 15 years old, so the hardware should support it.

We use a program called Hyena for remote wake-up, easy configurable too but we have many thousands of MAC addresses in the WOL txt file works a treat just right click and click wake-up job done it even works at our remote sites in the click of a button!
