iSCSI Initiator Hanging

I'm trying to configure iSCSI on Server 2008 R2 Standard, but it hangs/freezes whenever I try to connect to the SAN.

 

I have another server which is running bare-metal Hyper-V which can connect no problem to the SAN.

 

I thought it might be firewall related so turned it off and tried again, but still nothing. Then I found a post somewhere suggesting to try StarWinds iSCSI Initiator, but this fails with error : Failed to connect to remote server. Server may be refusing network connections. You may need to check firewall settings.

 

I can ping the SAN ok from the server that is having trouble. I have installed all latest M$ updates for server. Any ideas anyone?

Now, after installing Windows updates on our bare-metal Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 box it's hanging on there, where it was previously working. Can't find anything in the trusty Google so does anyone have any suggestions before I burn Hyper-V for falling at the first hurdle and install Xen instead?!

I have the same problem - iscsi and 2008R2 Std seemed to work fine (to EMC NX4) untill I loaded MPIO -

now any area I try to USE iscsi hangs (server manager - even just selecting the drive - etc....)

I guess I need to re-install without MPIO and see if it works consistantly

If I then load MPIO and it breaks again that may tell us something

 

This is painful

I've given up on Hyper-V for now. Installed XenServer and it's done everything I've asked of it at the first try. Talks to the SAN great too.

 

It's taken me a morning to set up Xen, and two DC's - it took all day yesterday to fail at getting a SAN talking to Hyper-V.

Well figured it out -----

My Network GUYS said the Cisco 6504 s were all set to support Jumbo Packets.

Well THEY WERE NOT.

 

Some packets got through thats why waiting forever actually got data - and the ISCSI initiator actually connected on and off

 

I went back to 1500 MTU and all is solid (ill work to get back to Jumbo later)

Nothing wrong with Hyper-v here, running several HP DL380 3 node clusters hooked up to Readynas 4200's on 10Gbe iscsi CSV's not a minutes downtime since last August.... Hyper-V all the way.

Does anyone know where I can get Microsoft iSCSI Software Target so I can have a play with the iSCSI initator before I get my SAN?

 

Google says its available on Technet, Ive got the schools agreement but cant find it on there, can anyone help me out please?

You could use the free version of the Starwind iSCSI target to test out the initiator side, or I've done it with the iSCSI target on Debian, the package is called "iscsitarget".

Looks like the references to the free version have gone from the site, if you download the trial though you might be able to register it for free use. It was just a basic version that had a 2TB storage limit and also a I think it had a limit on the number of concurrent connections.
