SAN Connection

Just got our new SAN. When connecting port 0 directly to port 0 on our server, the iSCSI works between them as expected. However, when I introduce a switch to the link it (so I can hook 2 servers up to talk to it) the link from each server to the switch is fine, but there is no link between the SAN and the switch.

 

Connect it back to one server directly and it's fine. It's a Dell MD3200 - am I missing something obvious here?

Tried multiple switches/cables. Then I thought about a cross-over cable so I tried a switch which has a port which can be flicked between cross-over or straight through, and this didn't work. So I tried another that could also do this to make sure it wasn't the switch and it still doesn't work.

SAN Port 0: 10.33.224.11/21

S1 Port 0: 10.33.224.2/21

S2 Port 0: 10.33.224.21/21

 

So don't think it's IP Conflict

What about the switch itself - managed/unmanaged? Any port security set up? Have you tried any other switches? When you say there's no link - do you mean the connection LED on the SAN/switch interface for the connector isn't lit up?

It's not that the ports are set to a speed are they? I.e it will only let you use a 1gbs and the switch is 10/100?

Have you tried setting the switch port to 1000 full duplex? Maybe it's not negotiating a speed properly?

I thought it might be something to do with speed. When connected directly it is Gig but through switch it is 10/100 as waiting on new gig switch for this. Any way to set the speed to 100 on the SAN?

I would have thought it was possible - probably through a telnet session.

 

Having said that though I wouldn't be surprised if it was stuck on 1000... would make sense for a SAN!

I'd suggest the problem may well be a config setting on the actual SAN rather than the switch (as the two servers can presumably talk to eachother via the switch).

 

Can you get into the SAN web interface and make sure the SAN LAN card's are re-set to auto negotiate etc?

Alright - managed to get my hands on an old gig switch and that is now working. Guess it'll just be easier to wait for the new gig switch to come as can't keep hold of this one for long.

Aah so you were trying to use a 10/100 switch? Wouldnt suprise me if the SAN only actually supports 1Gbit and not 100Mbit.

You may find that it will not connect at 100Mb by design, a number of SANs have 1Gb as the minimum as 100Mb is not enough throughput
