I've just had this further info through from the BCS, the initial pilot costs £15 per student:

The qualification will be 1 unit aimed at KS3:

Unit 1 – Internet Safety & Social Networking: For learners to be able to safely use the internet by identifying the potential dangers websites pose and assessing websites for safety. Learners will understand the potential risks that being online presents, and how to report online incidents. Learners will understand the basics of copyright and how to download files in compliance with the law.

For learners to understand the importance of protecting themselves online with regards to personal information when using social networking and sharing information. Learners will be able to take steps to protect themselves and their personal information whilst using the Internet and online services maintaining a safe online presence.

This will also include a section on ‘cyber-bullying’: for learners to understand what cyber-bullying is, how it occurs and the impact it has on the victim. Learners will understand the role of the cyber-bully, onlooker and victim. This will enable learners to deal with cyber-bullying issues safely, responsibly and legally.

Unit 1 is expected to be 20 guided learning hours & 3 credits;

We are looking at a price of £25 per learner (£15 for the pilot) which will consist of:

o Learner registration

o Online e-learning access

o 1 automated sample test (mock test)

o 1 online exam per unit

o Qualification certificate

In addition to this the following will be available to you:

o Syllabus

o Lesson plans and materials

o Curriculum mapping

There will be an assessment, this will be in the format of multiple choice and will consist of 20 questions and should last for no more than 30 minutes.

Update - The BCS have just phoned to see whether we're still interested (at £15 per student we're not!) They're hoping to reduce the cost of this, though to what they don't know at this time!
