[ms office - 2003] Office 2003 Word won't save students work

Got a strange issue on some new HP Z200 PCs running XP Pro SP3 with Office 2003 installed.

 

As an admin no issues everything runs fine. However as a student Word refuses to save the document the UNC path to the students hidden work on the DC is correct (as it is and works in other Office 2003 (Excel, Powerpoint etc) but Word absolutley does nothing when they try to save in Word - the only option to succesfully save seems to be to a memory stick.

Have you denied them the ability to delete anything off their share? I know Publisher has issues saving to shares with "Deny delete" permissions set

Thanks for your question / answer Pooley. I don't think it's a permission issue seems to be specific to the HP machines as I checked the student ability to save from elsewhere and that's fine?

The only other time i've had something similar is when the kids had pressed "cancel" when first running word, as apposed to letting it go through its initial setup.

 

Maybe try an office repair?

Yep, it's an odd one being just specific to Word on those new HP computers. Everything else saves as it should and the default path for the saves is identical in Word as it is in Excel.

 

The only other time i've had something similar is when the kids had pressed "cancel" when first running word, as apposed to letting it go through its initial setup.

 

Maybe try an office repair?

are you using redirected my docs to something like \\server\users$\2004\username ? if so ive found they need read access to the users$ and 2004 folders

They have read access - it seems something specific to those new HP PCs we have - just can't figure out what! Had another odd MS Office issue recently too - teachers came back from a cluster training day with new Curriculum (Primary) data on a CD saved in a mix of Office 2003 and 2007 Word and Excel. Most the 2003 Word files refused to open of our 2007 software?

Have you tried testing with multiple student accounts rather than just one to make sure it isn't an issue with that account.

 

Did running the office detect and repair routine turn anything up?

 

Also is the UNC path in word definately showing the same as it is on the other Office apps (could be a slip up when you built the profile / policy for those machines)?

 

Simple things you've probably already checked, but best have them said before you go any further...

1. What service pack is Office 2003 on?

 

2. Have there been any Windows/Office Updates that have run?

 

3. Can you try adding the problem user to the local admin group and try?

 

4. Can you logon as problem user and open an existing word document on share and make a change and save?

 

5. Is it only with new documents?

 

6. Do you have any AV running on these machines? If so what and and has this been updated? Try and disable and try again

 

7. Can you create a new share on the DC with full control permissions for the problem user and see if they can create new documents here and save?
