Uraken Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 anyone know how i can do this for free cheers in advance as always.
plexer Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Make an executable zip that auto runs the executable you want and password protect the exe zip archive? Ben
Uraken Posted February 20, 2007 Author Posted February 20, 2007 don't have winzip mate and its for the ultravnc zip file so not sure it will work, basically i want to be have users enter a password when they click on the exe, i have seen programs but they all cost money..
tarquel Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 winrar? or the free 7zip [although I havent tried doing it using that yet]. Nath.
ChrisH Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Get 7 zip and make it a self extracting password protected archive. If it has to execute a command as well you can make a 7 zip silent installer to trigger this.
Uraken Posted February 20, 2007 Author Posted February 20, 2007 edited* the problem i have with this is that the exe i'm trying to protect is a already packaged file so if i add it to an archive it unzips it all and i just want it to run the exe inside.
plexer Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 You can have a exe zip package extract it's contents and run a specified program i.e the one you want to execute I've done the same with a vnc one click install just didn't bother with a password. I never said use winzip allthough you could install it it's still free to try. Or 7zip etc.... Ben
Friez Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Unsure of what your exact situation is here, but why use a password protection? Surely it would make more sense to set the security properties of said exe file so that only certain users are allowed to execute it (i.e. the users you want!).... Rightclick exe file -> properties -> security tab.... Those who aren't priv'd to do it won't be able to run it. You can also set these up via script, but can't remember the exact syntax off the top of my head...
Uraken Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 thats what i want to do plexer, friez the exe is online so ntfs won't work in this situation.
OutToLunch Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Run the exe file through ProtectExe (imaginative name!) http://www.paehl.de/english.php Anyone downloading and running the protected version of the file will be required to enter a password before running it. Be warned that any program which binds itself to another exe to protect it may cause some virus scanners to cry and throw their toys out of the pram.
Uraken Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 i came across this page as part of my original search but when i went to download it looked like it had downloaded and then jsut crashed out i think it may be a corrupt zip or something.
OutToLunch Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 The name of the program is clickable, both above the description and below it by the hash... 8O http://www.paehl.de/proex.zip
Uraken Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 sorry posted a bit quick and have since edited take a look at the zip file it just don't work which is a shame..
plexer Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 I used ChilkatZIP http://www.chilkatsoft.com/ to do it. http://www.chilkatsoft.com/ChilkatSfx.asp Ben
OutToLunch Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 sorry posted a bit quick and have since edited take a look at the zip file it just don't work which is a shame.. Zip file is working fine - I redownloaded it from the site to check before I posted the link, and used it to test protect a random exe file... Use a download manager or download again...
