Currently in the process of getting a new server but a few questions have arisen. Background Info. current server is 2003 Fujitsu, all clients xp, New server HP M110

Looking to go to W7 clients but not in the imediate future due to cost implications

Licences/software bought under a Select agreement with microsoft through the LA, if that helps. Original server licence bought this way.

QuestionsCan we use the current server license with the new server?

If we go to server 2008 will we have problems/issues running xp clients mapping, printers etc?

If we get 2008 do we have to buy server client licences for all the existing PC's

Any other advice welcome as I need to get this sorted soon.

2008 is newer so you will need to buy a new licence for it.

You will need new CALs for each machine to talk to it.

If you are under a school agreement then your liscences are for the latest versions anyway so there would be no additional cost. If you brought outright then you will need to either buy outright again or go for a schools agreement which apparently are getting much cheaper shortly.

Thanks, so just to confirm i will need to purchase a license for 2008 (which version should i get?) And a cal for each pc that will connect to it (or is that maximum individual connections at any one time?) Sorry if daft questions but never had to deal with this minefield before!

printers can be an issue as 08r2 is x64 and xp is almost always 32bit its more of an issue i find with printers that win7 recognises by default than ones you have to load drivers for but it can be a pita

If we decide to stick with 2003 till we change to W7, then do i have to buy a new license for the new 2003 install (it was bought under the select license agreement through the LA if that means anything) if the old one is decomissioned as a server? I would presume the original cals would be ok?

The install code was the same when we bought a server for one of the other schools years ago so would that make it a volume license like the xp ones we buy through the same agreement?

No the licence is bound to the institution not the machine. So you could install 2k3 server on the new server no problems. But if you want to format and re install an os on the original server you would need to buy a new licence to cover your second server. Edited by denon101

Given that you have to buy new CALs for the new server, why not consider retaining the old one to run the printers and act as extra storage. It could save you hassles with drivers assuming the printers come to end of life before the old server.

echo what elsiegee40 says - I have 2 schools planning a move to W7 and Server 2008 R2 in the next year and the server 03 print server thing is exactly what I've said to them. I also suggested to one of them that it runs WSUS and to the others (where it is a good spec) that they use it for SIMS

So i presume there are no issues with running 2008 and 2003 servers on the same network then? Its a good idea but that means buying a 2008 license acnd all the cals with it. Might save that for when we move to 2008 and W7 and at thte moment if the license is for the institution install 2003 on the new one, decomission the old one and re evaluate how things are going then. The old server is not a greaer spec so may end up as extra storage and print server as a new install (2003) when we eventually move to 2008 as we wil stil have the 2003 license. Thanks, great idea there, set me thinking.

As usual all this future upgrade is dependant on funds available and at the moment they are in short supply so the date to change to 8K and W7 may slip further into the distance!

Maybe I'm missing something but what is the issue with 2008r2, printer drivers and XP?

If you share a printer on 2008r2 you can just add 32bit drivers to hand out to the clients.

That's exactly what I was about to say. Our file/print server is 2008r2 and we have mostly xp clients (except 3 machines).when we install a printer we install 32bit and 64bit drives for each printer to make sure it maps accordingly.

usually you are right but with some older printers ive found it can be a pain esp if the driver is builtin to 08r2 as getting a matching version is a pain. Ive also found that some printers seem to need plugging into usb once to get drivers installed then changing port to network works fine. Like i said its some printers sometimes

Thanks for all the helpfull suggestions, think I know where to go with this now. I am going with the suggestion of new license 2008 and cals for the new server and then leaving the old server as it is to just cope with printers and Wsus (presume i can leave wsus where it is or will i have to re install on new server?) The new one will run dhcp, ad and sophos. Seems the sensible option when sitting down to look at it. Reading through the forum it seems there are various versions of 2008, which one should i get, it will be 64 bit which ever version i think. Will ease the changeover with leaving printers on the old one. Any more suggestions always welcome.

long as you dont rename the server wsus can just stay where it is if your renaming uninstall it then rename and reinstall may as well leave av on old server as well less load on the main one

Old server is keeping same name so thats ok, cant have sophos on old pc as not enough room, which is one of reasons for server change, so new install on new server. Its good enough spec and not doing a great deal else so should cope. Any ideas on the 2008 flavour we should get?
