Guest TheLibrarian Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 As the title says, I am trying to downgrade a HP110-3101 netbook (17 need to be done) from Windows 7 to Windows XP. Unfortunately the drivers (from the HP site) for the ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI that are required for the XP install do not work in the text setup part of XP. The text setup part of XP insists that the hardware selected is not in the netbook. In fact, I've tried every option that the text mode setup driver gives and still no luck. I've also tried the latest drivers for the controller from the Intel site - same issue. I've tried older drivers they cause the same issue briefly then cause a stop BSOD. I've done the sensible thing and spoken to HP (no help) and I'm in the process of contacting Intel. Thanks for reading, any (sensible) suggestion are welcomed gratefully.
FN-GM Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 If you google the Device ID you might find drivers some other place. I needed some XP drivers for a HP laptop. I got them from the Sony Vio website of all places.
Guest TheLibrarian Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 No, we just aren't going to make the move to Windows 7 yet. The school has taken the stance that when we move to 7 it will be a full migration.
HallX Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I think I've had this problem before. Try going into BIOS, find anything that resembles SATA mode (usually under Advanced options), & change it to IDE or Legacy mode (depending on BIOS). Hope this helps Paul

Thanks - that option would be nice unfortunately it's not there. I've never seen a BIOS with so few settings.

Guest TheLibrarian Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Go on, you know you want to :-) Oh what a surprise - still no option. The BIOS is by Insyde, I think they should be called Avoid...
gjdb Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 On the last HP laptop i have checked (ProBook 4520s) the AHCI setting was 'hidden' i believe under security settings. Also check in Win7 the exact name and device id, this way you should find the right driver, i had the same problem when trying to get XP on this ProBook. I finally found the the correct driver on Intel`s website, i have used this driver: Intel Rapid Storage Technology v9.6.0.1014

I finally found the the correct driver on Intel`s website, i have used this driver: Intel Rapid Storage Technology v9.6.0.1014 There are 21 options in this BIOS, 2 in security both of them password options. I've even included the 3 Exit "options" to increase that number... Windows 7 reports the device as ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI (PCI ID 8086:27C1). I'll trawl the Intel site some more, because both versions of the driver on the HP site fail miserably.
gjdb Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) The driver i posted does have this line in the .inf so it should work: %PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106.DeviceDesc% = iaStor_Inst,PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106 Driver added to attachment.Intel Rapid Storage Technology v9.6.0.1014.zip Edited February 1, 2011 by gjdb

So far I've found at least 4 different versions of this blasted driver and none of them (unfortunately including the one you suggest) recognise the SATA controller in the text mode setup of XP. We're now back on to HP and our reseller - I am shocked at how bad the support from HP was. I didn't expect them to help me with the downgrade but I did expect them to care that the driver they supply doesn't work!
