Look at grandstream for cheap, reliable phones with good features

GXP-2000 or GXP-2010 are feature rich at a great price.

Avoid the GXP-2000. We have them at our place and they have some serious shortcomings. The main one being that the microphone gain is linked to the speaker volume. So, if you are quiet, you have to turn your volume up to increase the mic gain. Also, there is a built in 'echo' on the handset, so you hear yourself a few milliseconds after you talk. This is fine for me, but I've had lots of complaints from other staff.

Take a look at Snom handsets, they're German built so are significantly better. Or even Polycom - they make some cheap handsets but they still maintain their quality.

Snom phones usually ok and not too pricy. Don't really cheap out - you will regret it. OTOH, the Aastra units we use at the office may be a bit rich for home use but they are great.

I am prepared to pay if its right, I always tend to buy a higher model of something that I need, tends to last me longer.

Does anyone know if Avaya do any SIP handsets, I cannot see any on the net, we use these at work and I like them.

I have a Snom M9 Dect system that works quite well, I bought a bundle with 2 handsets and the base station.

The base unit is GAP compatible so you can link normal Dect handsets to it as well.

I think it supports up to 8 Service providers simultaneously. I Currently have 4 SIP providers registered with 8 numbers but of course you can just as easily configure it to work with a local Asterix box or whatever you have.

There is no POTS support on this model so It's SIP only, my only complaint is the audio quality is slightly tinny but batteries are good with a couple of days use out of the charger if you turn off the gadgets like backlights colour display and RSS feeds etc... But where's the fun in that?

Cheers for the replies, I am currently looking at all kit mentioned and see what is best. With it all been new to me I am going to spend my time getting the right item and know it will be money well spent.
