ifarmery Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I have searched for this and have unable to come up with an answer as to what is causing it. Students are creating moviemaker files and when they go back to them they sometimes get the error 'moviemaker cannot open this file' If i check the file on my machine it opens and works no problem so there is nothing wrong with the file. The problem seems to occur or occurs much more often on older slower computers rather than our newer ones. The machines have recently been re-imaged yet still develop this 'fault' I have tried reducing the hardware acceleration but this did nothing. Has anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this or a solution to fixing it (apart from not using movemaker!)? Thanks for any help Ian

mattx Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 A better one to use is Pinnacle's Video Spin - free, stable and does the basics. Free video editing software download lets you edit and upload your movies for free - VideoSpin - Create your own movie clips in minutes!
itguy22 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 We are having the same issue! has anybody out there got an answer :-)
ifarmery Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 I thought it was just me! Maybe its a South Yorkshire only Error!
chrisman Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I've had / fixed this. It is a MS security update applied by windows update. The version of the MovieMaker executable has been upgraded. Make sure all your machines are running with the latest exe. Sorry, I've forgotten the MS Knowledgebase number, but should point you in the right direction. 1
ifarmery Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 I have got version 2.1.4027.0 is there an update to this? But an update should fix it you think?
ifarmery Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 The problem I have seems to do with computer performance, a file can not work on an older slower machine but I can run it on my newer machine and it runs fine. The only rooms having this problem are the ones with the older machines in them.
chrisman Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I have got version 2.1.4027.0 is there an update to this? But an update should fix it you think? The latest file version is 2.1.4028.0
itguy22 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Hi All, It seems to be on an older machine, Does anybody know of the MS KB update that possibly may have an effect on WMM?
chrisman Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-050 - Important: Vulnerability in Windows Movie Maker Could Allow Remote Code Execution (981997)
synaesthesia Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Also part of Service Pack 3 if I remember right. Hence a file created in MM on an SP3 machine won't open on an SP2 machine.
