Currently I'm using Windows Server 2003, and it works fine.. But If Windows Server 2008 is great, then I must want to replace 2003 by windows Server 2008... Please post your opinion...
jsnetman Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 If it's doing what you want it to do why upgrade, saying that we upgraded to 2008 and win 7 clients 2 years ago only because we were due an ugrade cycle. It does not do any more than 2008 really in an xp environment, but if you have win 7 then it is essential.
ricki Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 HI The features are good and the comparability with windows 7 is essential, but for some reason we have had random machines reboot at logon and several settings had to be changed to stop it putting out lots of bad packets. Richard
themightymrp Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 We switched all our servers to 2008 last year and have had no problems. Personally I think it's great and as mentioned above, its an essential step if you want Win 7 clients. We are in the process up moving to 7 but still use mainly XP.

There is no direct upgrade from 2003 to 2008 r2 assuming you are using the 32 bive 2k3 server as there is no 32 bit versin of 2k8 r2. AD is easy to move though, just do the ad prep on the existing server, join the 2k8 r2 server and dcpromo.exe it to a domain controller and both AD and DNS will replicate across. You then just need to move the fsmo masters to the new server if you are removing the old one (its about 15 mouse clicks). If removing the old one just use dcpromo.exe on it to demote it assuming everything has been moved successfully. 2
jamesfed Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I can't say I've ever had any issues with it - we moved from 2000 to 2008 (and over the summer will move all the DCs over to R2 (member servers are all on 2008)). 64bit should be high on your agenda if you are looking to move as should Virtulisation.
Guest blacksheep Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Went to 2008 32bit over hols, was going to do R2 but realised this was a bigger project with my current hardware. Have not gone Win7 yet So far better features - better quota management, can do groups of staff, dirs (although there was an edition of windows with these?) resource monitor improved is good if you use it much, me never did in 2k3 file templates to stop applications etc. being dumped on shares (could do with batch etc. but this works better as the enduser has an immediate access denied) TBH still learning new features as time (as part of 70-646), the main gain for me so far has been the better quota management. I would go the full hog if you got the budget and upgrade your servers and go 64bit, and do what SYNACK said

Yeh that what I thought, might as well get into learning to newer version, although 2k3 was working fine! Oh and the Cert.. My main reason was to pickup the new w7 specific GP features, although you may be able to add the templates into 2k3 not sure.
