Server has 4 SCSI Hot Swapable 72.8 Gb Drives fitted.

Yesterday the drive in the 1st bay is green

2nd bay is red

3rd bay is green

4th bay green

I shutdown server and I replaced 2nd bay with new drive and rebooted

1st bay is NO LIGHT

2nd bay is green

3rd bay is green

4th bay is green

It seems that a spare drive has been created.

What should I do now? Do I need to reconfigure the raid area so that all 4 drives are active.

Havent a clue. Please.any ideas Ta

Also, Login to the HP Server Managment Software (if you have it installed, if not install it) :) and see what the status of the RAID is from there.

It's certainly worth firing up the HP array configuration tool and seeing what it reports. You should also find that when a volume or raid group is selected in the tool it will flash the error lights on all drives that form a part of it allowing you to see which drives are doing what (also handy for scaring nervous admins:P).

I have a few older HP servers where either the light on the backplane or the light pipe on the drive caddy has failed for the green light. The drives work perfectly just don't have the green lights.

I have the new downloaded HP Array Configuration Utility running

It tells me that I have Raid 5

Smart array 641

Parallel SCSI Array with a spare - 1 Logical drive

Assigned Drives

72.8 Gb Parallel at port 1 SCSI ID 0

72.8 Gb Parallel at port 1 SCSI ID 1

72.8 Gb Parallel at port 1 SCSI ID 2

Spare Drives

72.8 Gb Parallel at port 1 SCSI ID 3

From this I assume everthing is OK

Am I corect in assuming that if one of the 3 drives dies...then the spare will take its place

Thanks for your help
