2097 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 ok atm our current server is a DC/AD/WSUS/Exchange/Printers and files ! I have 1 server which does antivirus , Home access plus ( IIS) and stores internal apps for network usage Another server which does just web services such as the VLE and Website ( apache) Looking to move probally at minimum the file and printers to a new server ( maybe also wsus) Im looking for some decent spec enterprise SATA disks ? (ON raid 5 im looking at a minimum of 1tb combined space ) and a card that can do raid 5 ? or is raid 10 recomended for a file server ? SAS is really out of question as there too expensive. Would would every 1s recomendations be ?? I have a spare server which is ok for this ! so just need the additonal hardware
Duke Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 No interest in buying a pre-built server and saving the hassle + get a warranty? If not, check Seagate for the disks as that's what most server/SAN manufacturers seem to use, and LSI for the RAID card. I couldn't give you specific models, but there will be 'enterprise' SATA drives in the Seagate range and just get an LSI card that meets your requirements. If you need a supplier try CCS Media. Chris
3s-gtech Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 My file server is in RAID 5 and RAID 1 (two sets of share drives) with the RAID 5 doing the main shares. Wouldn't have it any other way without good reason - the redundancy is very handy! Read speed is most important for ours, so 5 is fine. I used onboard RAID on a desktop board for it too (very impressive for what it is, but wouldn't recommend it over a card!)
SHimmer45 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 alot of the server in the school im in are a split between Dell and Intel, i favour the intel kit as it is cheaper for the same spec's, and its easier to see what you are getting for your money as the Dell options arent always clear. as for disks Fujistu's are also popular with OEM's for servers as well, Adaptec make good RAID cards
2097 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Any one else done the same as me and bought a new server and added a raid card and SATA HDD's ? I would also be intrested in buying a pre built if it was cheap enough any one got an recomendations of parts and sites ?
