IP Address Exhaustion!

Hi,

 

We just recently added 60 netbooks to our network...it seems, now, we have run out of ip addresses. What do we do? Bearing in mind we are assigned an IP range by our local authority.

Ask them for more, or install an ISA server or something similar and allocate your own range.

this could be a good point - but depends if it is this that is causing the problem - If you ask for more addresses you may find that you totally have to change your scope to something different.

 

I would suggest going for having a ISA or something similar (maybe smoothwall express) and using it as the default gateway so you only use 1 external ip address and then have your own internal range using the 192.168.* this is then easier to increase the scope when needs be.

yeah be careful but you can always setup the external address of said firewall product which you would like to have multiple addresses you can then setup NAT's from the 192 address to a 172 address for example

just vlan those devices onto the original subnet

I work for an LA and we are more than happy to allocate more address space to schools.

 

This saves messing around with NAT.

And the same applies here in Birmingham!

 

We do check things like lease times etc. But as long as you can justify the need for extra IP addresses and have taken steps to preserve and manage the ones you have, we are generally happy to allocate more. The one 'gotcha' is that we do somtimes have to move a school to a new IP block, as the another school may 'own' the IP block/s a school needs to expand into to extend it's current IP range. As moving IP range is a big job for both us and the school, we do these kind of changes over school holiday periods if possible, so as to keep disruption to a minimum.
