(must say it feels like a friday ) I'm seeking to let staff access the full suite of software and linked drives including sims from home.... basically so they can log on from home and access the network.... Just wondering if there is firstly any 3rd party software out there that would do this? and if not how to go about finding out if on terminal services to do this? and if this would work? I do not want to let them RDP in for a number of reasons including static IPS etc... Any ideas of views would be great! Thanks Edited January 18, 2011 by RichB grammer
glennda Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 We currently have setup SSL explorer (now adito/openvpnals) so that members of staff can connect using a web interface. They can then give staff access to Mapped drives etc. We also have setup a terminal server (inside our network or you can just use a suite of machines in it room etc) so that staff can RDP through a Java application that is lauched from the web interface and connect through port 443 securely. There is also Home access+ which is supposed to be pretty good although i have never used it. Toby 1
danbuntu Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 the Microsoft pptp vpn through RRAS is pretty good. With 2008 I believe you can set it up in server farms as well 1
strawberry Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 terminal services all the way. its renamed rds in 2008 but you can do fantastic things, Web access allows you to run rdp via a website, Gateway allows you to use a vpn tunnel meaing you have security and can rdp into any machine on the network knowing only the name (you can create rdp shortcuts as well) , and remote app is used via weba ccess to start a full rdp session that only shows the window your in so for instance you could get just sims to run seemlessly. can give you creds to our setup if you like. 1

36Degrees Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 We use Sun's Secure Global Desktop which is linked to our Thin Client system's servers which are basically terminal services servers. Only problems to date have been environment related (power off across village, air con failure so servers overheated, etc).
edutech4schools Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Open VPN Active Server (free for 2 concurrent users) uses a vm (vmware or MS) to create ssl vpn. Once connected its as though your in the school.

3s-gtech Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 We use a Netgear SSL312 for this, does the job well and allow quite a few concurrent users. They then connect from a shortcut to RDP.
