Blocking Minecraft

Hi,

 

Our lovely IT students love playing minecraft, but we cant figure out a way to block the Java program without effect the rest of windows. Normally we would block the exe of a game via sophos application control, but doesn't seem to work on this.

 

Any ideas?

While this isn't 100% successful I can describe an Group Policy setting that has blocked access to Runescape for Students here and might be worth a go for Minecraft for you.

 

[server OS: Server 2008]

 

Create or edit a GPO that controls Student settings. Go to:

 

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Internet Control Panel/Security Page

 

Select Site to Zone Assignment List. Select 'Enabled. Click 'Show' Click 'Add'

 

In the 'Enter the name of the item to be added' box type 'minecraft.net'

 

In the 'Enter the value of the item to be added' box type '4'

 

[both without the quotes]

 

Click 'OK', 'OK', 'Apply' Close the GPO editor window.

 

Wait for policy to be replicated. Logon as a student and test. Fingers crossed you will find that Minecraft is inaccessible.

can't you just block it's connection to the internet thus rendering it unusable?

I have to take this approach because our ISA sever crashed without hope of recovery some time ago. There is no money to replace it so I am looking for other ways of URL blocking. As I said in the reply above this is not 100% effective but it does work for some URLs I want blocked.
