Mandatory profiles should indeed work fine for sims, so i think we need specifics there.

Personally for outlook we use an outlook.prf file with our outlook shorts pointing to: "/importprf \\domain.local\Global\outlook.prf" at the end of the shortcut, global being a domain file share. Works fine for teachers and students who are both on mandatory profiles, i think it only needed one small change when we switched from outlook 2003 + exchange 2003 to exchange 2010 + outlook 2010 too

Customize Outlook profiles by using an Outlook Profile (PRF) file

If it's trying to update itself give the teacher accounts full access rights to the sims install folder on the client. Though probably best to either take a screenshot of the exact problem or contact sims about it, also is this on XP or windows 7?

no its windows xp yea i will try and get a screen shot i have spoken to sims about it and they said aslong as it can write to the my documents folder should be ok

They are wrong we need to give full access in the program files.

Also the wont be a mandatory profile thing, it will do the same on any type.

I tried for days to get outlook playing nice with mandatory profiles but it never worked.

In the end I gave up and just removed the roaming profile from their AD account so it remembers the settings on each local computer they log on to.

Fixed every profile issue overnight.

Students use mandatory but they use webmail.
