remote file access

Hi

 

I am looking at remote file access from home. Does any one have any ideas. A google search was not very helpful.

 

I want staff to be able to access their h and g drives from home. I do NOT want remote access involving terminal services.

 

free/opensource would be best and linux even better.

Home Access Plus, easy to setup and very easy to use! However I see you use moodle for your website, have you tried configuring Windows Share Web Client? Edited January 5, 2011 by clarky2k3

Adito/OpenVPN Als (same thing pretty much!) gets my vote - really easy to setup - and you can also setup for some staff to have rdp access to a physical machine in school.

You could try WebDAV. Client support is built right in to Windows, so users should be able to simply type a URL in to explorer to get to their file area, and server-side support is built in to Apache.

 

I do NOT want remote access involving terminal services. free/opensource would be best and linux even better.

 

If other remote access protocols are acceptable, you could try an LTSP server instead of Terminal Services.

 

Setting up a Linux-based WebDAV server should be very simple - install a basic Linux distriubtion, mount the user file share somewhere on the file system, then install Apache and enable a WebDAV share on that mount point. I don't know how you get WebDAV to authenticate against Active Directory, you might have to join the Linux machine to your domain first. Ensure you have a consistent mapping of UIDs / GIDs for that WebDAV share, otherwise things will get very confused as people start using the WebDAV share to write files.

I spent about 5 days messing with text config files and ldap strings! I wouldn't call it easy to setup

 

Great system if you can get it working

 

Personally we have terminal web services. Staff just go to a web page and it creates a remote desktop like they have in school. Its great because they can use Sims from home as well and its easy to use.

The videos on the Home Access Plus website need looking at. The bit where the author deleted cookies seemed a little unprofessional and the audio seems to be ok on one but quiet on another. Edited January 6, 2011 by Gibbo
