Backup SIMS database from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2

What happens in case you need to move from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 R2 for SIMS?

Is it just a matter of backing up and restoring the databases to 2008 R2?

Any help would be really appreciated.

The database needs to have gone through the conversion process to ensure it works properly. I have not tried simply moving from one to another, even if it works from the start you won't know what else might not be working right later on.

Also take into account that SQL Server 2008 R2 is not yet supported according to the Capita system requirements document.

errr.. yer... that to... most importantly!!!

Contact your support team or search on Capitas SupportNet (or threads here for that matter). You need to do the SQL 2008 migration using the Capita Tool. It's not a trivial backup and restore database process.

The deadline for this was October, there should have been some documentation / notifications sent your way.

The following is part of an extract from an email received to day re. UAT for Spring Release:-

The spring release will include new functionality and changes within the following areas;

........ SQL Server 2008 R2 support.

That doesn't mean it will definitely appear in Spring - it may get broken by the testers.

Mind you - I know of one school, to remain nameless, that has used it since Feb 2009 with no problems! So it will hopefully be ok!

Thanks guys, I've just seen the latest requirements and 2008 R2 is not listed. Basically the person who was in charge missed the deadline so we now need to migrate as soon as possible.

Our local authority will charge for this, so ideally we need to do it ourselves. I've been looking into other threads but I cannot find a link for the Capita tool.

Has anyone got a link for this?

go to solus and download simsinfrastructure updates. then run simsinfrastructure.exe or some such file and then it will create the simssql2008 upgrade .exe file, and the fms one. sorry i've probably got the names wrong but the instruction manual from Capita lays it all out. The file is also on a thread here too i think, certainly the process of how to 'unpack' the tool is somewhere.

sorry can't link to it, on a limited connection at the mo'.

KB100597 - Does Capita support SQL Server 2008 R2?

Confirmation of support for this from Spring 2011!

Thanks, will have a go. Where do I get the latest version of the instruction manual?

That's good news. In that case do we stick with 2008 and upgrade to R2 in a few months?

Get the latest manual from Capita's SupportNet website.

You need to migrate to 2008 as soon as possible otherwise you wont be supported.

Once that's done you can move to R2 at a later date, but it's not compulsory so there's no hurry.

i just checked and if you download the autumn infrastructure updates and then run the SIMSSQLInfrastructureSetup.exe it will unpack the migration tool along with the latest documentation.

You could also search for documentation from the home page. search terms sql 2008 will give a link to resource 16101 which is the sims mini guide.

Many Thanks. I found the pdf file!

Since I am a still newbie when comes to SIMS, can I just confirm something. Do I use SOLUS to download the autumn infrastructure update? Will SIMSSQLInfrastructureSetup.exe be included in the update?

yes that's right. just be careful that if you are not on the latest version that you dont inadvertently also download a SIMS update and install it.

there is a check box you can click to make sure any downloaded update is not applied yet.

Only the school can make that decision. Your problem now is that SQL 2005 is no longer supported with the recent Autumn Release of SIMS v7.136. If you are still on the Summer Release v7.132 then I would assume that you are ok!

I've just run SOLUS but cannot find the SIMSSQLInfrastructureSetup.exe file, although I did enable "check for infrastructure updates"

Am I missing something ?

you may need to contact your support team to release the infrastructure update... i had to request it to do the migration because our support team prefer to copy the files the manually for a fee.

Ok thanks. I managed to get the file now. As we need to migrate to a new Server, I have setup a new Server with Server 2008 R2 x64 and SQL Express 2008 x64 with SP2.

Will attempt to migrate today after 3pm.

The way I see it is:

Stop SQL Server 2005 on current Server

Run Backup routine and backup all databases

Run SIMS-FMS SQL2008(Advanced Mode)

Select SQL 2005 Database

Select SQL 2008 Database

Choose Redirection Service(Will that depend if I run one already?)

Click on Migrate and wait.

Other than that, will I need to move any files to the new Server?

Since this will be a new Host, I guess I need to change the location of the SIMS instance under connect.ini ?

So after backing up the databases we run the migration on the new Server but couldn't get the clients to login.

At the end, the problem was found by someone. The SQL Server Browser Service on SQL 2008 wasn't running in the background, hence clients were not able to login. We also applied the latest update and all seems well now.
