server 2008 to 2008 R2 upgrade?

Hi we want to deploy windows 7, I need to upgrade from 2008 to 2008 R2, both are dc gc, dhcp, and dns. Did anybody have any issues when upgrading or did you re-install?

You don't need to reinstall and can easily manage the Windows 7 clients via GP by upgrading the GP templates in the global templates folder. Not sure about the upgrade as I have always done full reinstalls as they are cleaner.

2008 R2 is a 64bit Operating System only, and requires a clean install if your 2008 install is a 32bit installation.

I do advise however where possible to do a clean install of the servers.

You don't need to have Windows 2008 r2 for Windows 7, however since Vista/2008 we've upgraded the servers (the back end infrastructure) before deploying the newer clients to take advantage of the relevant newer enhancements.

 

As for upgrading 2008 to 2008 r2, provided the 2008 is the 64bit version is is possible to upgrade. Most of our 2008 r2 servers were a clean install, however a couple were upgraded. The servers that were upgraded kept on crashing - however after a lenghtly investigation we found it to be a combination of the hardware (CPU version), Windows 2008 r2 and Hyper-V rather than an issue with the upgrade itself (by that time we had already wiped and re-installed fresh).
