alonebfg Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Ok after a long time away i am back lol (not had time to do nothing rl getting so busy) right back to the problem in hand. we have decided in the school to set up a internal web server. As i have got a few pcs lying around and it is only going to be for about 60 or so students also going to put some teachers recorses on it and so they can stream meadia through a web browser without having to download it on the laptops. so i am going down the linux route with apache and mysql. one of the big questions is which distro. points to note. 1 I am a novice so this is a big experment. 2 will be simple to set up. 3 wont cost a penny as we have no money at all. i have had a play with Ubuntu and opensuse plus knoppix for what i am going to do what will be the best disto.
webman Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Download the Ubuntu server ISO and choose "Install a LAMP server" at boot Once it's installed you'll need to configure the IP address, but apache and mysql will be installed.
alonebfg Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 is this the best one also as i am a novice with linux so my next question has it got a good gui if not is it easy to learn. i know basics. it says it does not. if not can you recomend one.
webman Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 No it doesn't have a GUI, but using WinSCP (for example) to copy files over from a Windows box is really easy to do. If you'd prefer, just get the normal Ubuntu, and then follow the guide at Ubuntuguide for getting Apache etc. up and running. And don't forget Edugeek are here to help as well
ChrisH Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Get bitvise tunnelier. It has an easy to use SSH and SFTP client.
alonebfg Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 wow i have just found this site http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_6.06 i asume its the same for 6.10 if not i can give 6.06 as i see it is still avalble for download and if i install ISPConfig i cna then do it all from webbrowser. is that right looks simple but i might be back.
webman Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Yeah, use 6.06, it is the Long-term support version.
alonebfg Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 ok thats it looks like it is downloading lol hope it works going to have to try it in work as i have only got wireless at home. Just off hand how much ram prossising power ect do you think it will need as i have got an old pc i was looking at using as a test base. any idears it had xp installed but hard drive is not big enough to suit our needs as it is only 10G
Geoff Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 If you want a 'GUI' on a server I'd suggest you install Webmin. It gives you a web based interface to most of the functionality of a Linux system. I believe ubuntu has packages for it. As a long term proposition though, I encourage you to get to know the command line well. There's plenty of reading matter on the subject too if you need help (and of course the *nix forum here).
alonebfg Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 i am learnig would like to know what the min spec you would use for a internal web server thats all it will be used for about 60 clinets min ans hopefully stream some media.
Geoff Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Any old junk will work for such a light workload.
