So, is Kinect really going to make it into the school classroom? How would you use it? How would you change it?

Since our head of curriculum ICT bought a Wii last year and hasn't used it once, it probably won't make it into our classrooms for a while..

During the Lync Server launch the other week, they gave a brief demo of a Kinect project using Lync. The project basically turns Kinect into a cheap video conferencing device using your Lync infrastructure. It looked cool but you would only use it if you already had Kinect in a room.

But what about its other uses? Did you watch the video? Could it be used in place of or to compliment an interactive whiteboard?

Since it came out i've been wondering about this.. potentially i dont see why it cant be used as a minority report style interface, i think some students from MIT have done this.

How long it takes for it to work with a pc.. well thats another question..

Our PE department have a fancy set of dancemats and the system to drive it which cost about £4k im poingint them in the direction of kinect... far superior and a hell of a lot cheaper. As for classroom use, it certainly has the potential!

Linux drivers are already available so it is purely the software to use with the hardware that we need now.

Yeah i did find drivers were out there but as you say just need the software to make use of it.

That being said all of this is not approved by MS AFAIK.

@apeo: It is unsupported by Microsoft but they could find no breach in any terms of use or patents since the drivers don't modify the hardware in any way... they just enable the PC to utitilse the different bits of the Kinect device.

Hopefully the attraction of Kinect will make other device manufacturers producte similar hardware with decent software. Look at the MS Surface... very expensive and now everyone makes a similar device for less!
