Looking for Free software to convert .avi files

I'm trying to find free software that will convert .avi files to a format that can be uploaded to our SWGfL Merlin portal.

 

Currently the teacher has tried to upload .avi and it doesn't go.

I've used the freeware version of Any Video Converter in the past, it's pretty good and simple to use:

If you tell us which format you require - it would be helpful. SUPER can do most things, Format Factory, avidemux, etc

Thanks SpuffMonkey - that's the problem I wasn't at all what format is best suited as the current avi format doesn't seem to be happy going up to the SWGfL portal.

anv soft any video converter works a treat here (free also)

 

Download Photo DVD Maker, Photo Flash Maker, DVD Ripper, Video Converter, Audio Converter

 

some other good stuff for free

 

we stick to wmv files because they will work for the kids at home through media player without any other codecs.

Thankfully other people responding are aware of my inexperience and realised I was talking about converting files saved from a video camera (which currently fail to upload to SWGfL Merlin) to something that will upload and have given me several really useful answers which I have now passed on to the teacher who asked me to look into it.

I would see what video / audio codecs are being used ( AVI is a container like matroska ie .mkv ) edited thanks sombac, clearly beat me to it lol.

This can decipher what codecs are being used and you should be able to go from there.

 

Again as FN GM I would give handbrake a go, there are other options such as super and a few other ones that have been mentioned on other threads on edugeek - am sure a google search would pull these out ie

I'm going to vote for Freemake Video Converter since it can convert and edit almost every audio and video format; and has a UI that doesn't suck.
