INSET DAYS

Well, we have Today and Monday as INSET days...

 

It turns out that the only people working are the four IT staff and a site operative.

 

Its -4 outside, what are we doing at work?

We had the same thing last weekend....two IT Staff, three caretakers and one in the main office, all other staff off work. I really enjoyed receiving the email from the head which said "thank you all for your hard work so far this term, enjoy your the long weekend"....made me feel great that did.

Yeah we pretty much got the same treatment here to be honest.

Same here, but there was only going to be 4 of us left in school (IT, science tech and office manager). So we've been given a "work from home" day

Staff here do twilight sessions, and then the inset day they get off when it comes around. This offer is also extended to us, so we can work late on set nights and get the inset day off.

Speak to your Union. You can't have one set of rules for a group of staff and another for a different set.

Unfortunately you can. Training days are largely provided for teaching staff, not support staff and the school can apply a different set of rules for different categories of staff. When the head at my last school swapped a TT day for twilight sessions and closed the school for the day, we were told that we would have to use a day of our annual leave, we couldn't attend the twilight sessions as they took place during our normal working hours.

Yes, well that was the problem, anyone with no annual leave to take had a days pay docked.

We're getting to that point, too. Each year it gets worse, as we end up rolling more days into the next holiday year.

Next holiday year (from April) there are only gonna be 12 days where we're both here and about 25 where there's only one of us.

Support staff have CPD needs as well, they can't ignore them. So either they provide twilight sessions for support staff as well to match the teachers or let you have alt days off for your own training. So yes you are right, they can let the teaching staff wander off without the support staff but they have to let the support staff wander off at some other point.

If your performance management review highlights a training need then the school can look at providing it and that can take place during your normal hours so yes, you can wander off to get training. However, the 5 inset days are, primarily for teaching staff, in order that they can takepart in training sessions without it impacting on their teaching time. How and what training is provided for support staff is a different matter all together and will be managed by the SLT of the school in line with school policy.

I seem to recall that there was an option to work late and make up the time, but if you didn't want to do that then, you'd lose a days pay.

We have that joy coming at the end of term. The school officially closes to pupils on the Friday 17th, but the following Monday & Tuesday are INSET teachers at home days. So far I have had no clarification on whether my team has to work or if we can all take the time off as leave.
