I bumped into one of our governors in town having a moan because his router has packed up and Talktalk say it will be up to 14 days to get a new one. I have an old Netgear router I said he could have but I'm not sure if he will have the setup details.

Should it automatically configure or am I going to need the settings?

I've never gone with talk talk but have with other providers and generally as above either an email or in my case a letter with said details.

With http://www.bethere.co.uk myself and if I call the tech support line although they suggest there own thompson routers, they still walk you through what settings you require to enter or use on other routers ie netgear, linksys, draytek, etc etc

If there tech support number isn't too expensive to call obviously.

I suspect he spent a fortune on the phone to them yesterday whilst they decided his router was duff. I was hoping to avoid a call. Thinking about it, he did say it connected locally, so I should be able to get into admin and get the settings that way.

Thanks but isn't that the password for the original talktalk router. My netgear one will be different, luckily I know what it is. :)

He popped round to collect it. I hadn't got round to disconnecting it and I had to cut off some cable ties. I managed to slice into my finger with my leatherman. I put a plaster on and promptly stabbed the same finger just above the plaster. It was bleeding a bit, so I rushed off for another plaster and picked one of the kid's Mr Bump plasters. Lord knows what he'll say about me at the next governor's meeting!

but if you can log into the old router, then you can access the settings that you'll need for your netgear. they should be pretty straight forward as others have said, and in the original docs that it came with if they kept the box.
